Course for the Core: A Star Wars Story

Greetings fellow pilots! If you aren’t aware, Season 3 of the Vassal League has begun and I’ve finally joined the ranks. I learned of the first season too late, didn’t check my e-mail fast enough for the second but now I’m in.

Who am I? Fair question. No one really. Just a humble man in the Unknown Regions looking for joy in a game he loves. I want to be involved in the tournament scene but juggling my work schedule and family can make that very hard. Vassal solves that problem and allows me to test myself and improve.

I stream retro video games in what little free time that I have and have wanted to stream X-Wing for some time. This seems like a good time to start.

If nothing else, this is game tape. A way for me to record a match, reflect on problems with my play, and get better. For new players, I hope to provide a bit of tutorial and help people learn from my successes but more than likely my failures. For others, I hope to entertain with the story of a man and an ominous goal. Reach the Core Worlds.

Streaming a live match requires ground rules, so here’s what has come to mind so far:

-I won’t be reading chat. Different than my normal community centered stream but simple enough to accomplish. This way my play is not influenced by suggestions mentioned by viewers.

-I’ll post when my matches are scheduled but stream may be cancelled if the other player does not wish to be streamed.

-Trust in my group to not be watching during the match.

-Other rules that may come up as I experiment with this idea.

So I’m setting a Course for the Core. It should be quite a ride, so strap in!

My first match is set for September 28 th at 1:00pm PST (GMT-8)

My second match is set for September 29 th at 12:00am PST (GMT-8)

If you miss any, I will be uploading them to my YouTube channel as well.

First of all, I'd like to wish you best of luck in the league :)

the part I quoted puzzles me though. Why do you think this would be an issue ?

I shouldn't be an issue at all. It is either a rule or strongly suggested that players record and upload their Vassal logs, which means their opponents can scout them that way if they want to.

Why is this bad?

Sorry about the wording. Again, crazy work schedule, I'd been up for nearly 24 hours. I was trying to state that, during a match, my opponent at the time could have the stream up to gain knowledge about the match. Scouting is something that I cannot help of course and therefore is not something I worry about, it comes with the territory of streaming.

Thank you for the well wishes LordBlades.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far in the Vassal League.

I've managed to rake up 2 division wins and am currently sitting in the Inner Rim.

See you in the deep core soon!

First 2 matches are up on YouTube.

Looking for feedback on screen layout, talking points, or other ideas to improve the stream. Keep in mind, I am just one person with basic knowledge of OBS. Not a lot of pre/post production ability. I know they're a bumpy start for a stream but I've already gotten some constructional criticism.

Thanks to my awesome opponents for some great games.

I will update as matches get scheduled.

As someone doing the vassal league for the first time I just realized that being in the the unknown regions is possibly harder than most other divisions since you have no idea the player skill that's in your group. It could be all super good players who are just joining the league for the first time.

Very true, the second match was intense. Also, it is littered with those who end up abandoning the league and not playing any games so a loss can be hard to recover from when you may only get 3 matches out of 8 or 9 possible opponents.

The third match in my Course for the Core is set to start around 1PM PST.

Match number 4! Stream is up.

Match Number 5 is finally happening tonight at 11 PM PST. Flying against the 1st place player in my division. Tune in and wish me luck!
