End a Barrel roll touching?

By Kingsguard, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So it says you can't end a barrel roll overlapping another ship but can you end it touching another ship?

Touching is a defined game term and can only come about from an overlap. You can however perform a boost or barrel roll and end up adjacent to, and in physical contact with another ship. If you can place the ship's base flat on the table without nudging the other ship, you can end up in contact, but it's not considered "touching".

You can end a barrel roll with the bases in physical contact with each other, but "touching" is a defined term in the game that can only occur when a ship overlaps another during a maneuver.

So, while a barrel roll can result in the ships touching each other in the colloquial English definition of the word, it cannot result in the game state "touching" that prevents them from shooting at each other.

Edit, wow ninja P, the similarity in how we both phrased our replies...

Strange ruling, and unfortunate for my aspirations of running Arvel Crynyd with Vectored Thrusters. Thanks for the info.

Would you really want to live in a world where Soontir has yet another way to avoid getting shot at?

Another thought: since barrel rolling into physical contact with another ship is not "touching" caused by an overlap, a ship can barrel roll into physical contact and (if in arc) still fire and be fired upon.

Yes, that's correct.

Yes but just try to explain this to my EADHD (Extremely Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) friend who locks on to the word touching and can't accept that being in physical contact with a ship is not "touching" a ship. Things like this is also why it can take 5 hours to play a single 100 point game with him.

Don't use the word touching or in physical contact with then. Next to works just as well for the outcome of a close but successful BR.

That's just it, when I did something like this, he looked at the bases as said why did you just bump my ship, now you can't shoot me. And I had to try to explain it and he just kept saying "But they ARE touching!" Same thing happened with a rock, did BR, slid back right up against the edge and he tried to tell me that now I had to roll for damage and couldn't shoot because I was "touching" the rock. Sometimes I wonder why I keep playing him but then I remember he is a friend and I just deal with it.

This may be a silly question, but have you tried pointing out the rules where touching is defined?

It's on page 19 of the TFA rule book, which you can get as a PDF from this site. If you show him how the term is defined by the rules that may help.

Actually he did finally agree to accept that the rules are the rules but would then say "But they are stupid, touching is touching." This happens a lot, he doesn't like a rule, we talk about it for WAY TOO LONG, he finally accepts it, then we continue with game. There is no way he can ever play in a tournament and actually I am not sure many others would play with him for this and how long it takes him to decide on maneuvers, actions, who to shoot with what, basically anything done in the game. I know I am the only person he has ever played against and it is my fault he started in the first place.

Find all the places in the Rules Reference where "touching" appears and replace them with "entangled"?

Or the eminently simple 'bumps can only come about as a result of manoeuvres, BRs are not manoeuvres therefore'.

It seems you've created a monster, Dr Frankenstein. :)
