A slightly different Ghost list

By Karhedron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I enjoy running the Ghost in various configurations but I have noticed that survivability is an issue with its agility of zero. Normally people get around this by running it with Kanan as pilot or with Biggs (or both) but Kanan comes with his own problems. He is basically wedded to his Focus action meaning the crazy reds portion of the dial is out of bounds and stress-inducers can really hurt him.

I like the combination of Lothal Rebel and Hera crew for its agressiveness but it melts under any pressure. One thing I have noticed is that I frequently suffer attacks that cause 3 or more points of damage. That makes me think Reinforced Deflectors would be a good choice. The only downside is that I normally like to stick FCS in the system slot to make the most of those big primary guns. So I looked for other sources of Target Locks (which the Rebels have aplenty) and came up with the following list idea.

45 Lothal Rebel (35), Reinforced Deflectors (3), Hera (1), Chewie (4), ABT (2)

26 Biggs (25), R4-D6 (1), IA (0)

29 Dutch (23), TLT (6)

The combination of Reinforced Deflectors and Chewie should keep the Ghost alive for quite a while, even after Biggs goes down. Dutch acts as a TL provider to make up for the loss of FCS and also carries a TLT for added punch. He also sticks close to Biggs for defense as long as possible. The idea is to keep the Ghost pounding away with those big primary guns for as long as possible, pulling whatever Red maneuvers are necessary and compensating for the loss of actions with Dutch.

Norra with Weapons Engineer would probably be better but I cannot shave off enough points to fit her into the squad so I will stick with Dutch.

Am I crazy or does the idea have mileage?

Seems like a fun build to play. At first glance it doesn't seem overly competitive though. I know a ton of people who like the ABT Lothal, and it's dangerous for sure, but the ships you WANT to kill with the ABT are still too maneuverable to actually catch in R1.

Meanwhile, this list suffers from the same problem that every rebel synergy list suffers - once you lose one of the pieces, the others fall apart. The purpose of the Hera ABT Lothal is so you can do literally any move, but you end up stacking stress because of that. Typically this isn't a major concern as there is no defense, and you have a FCS TL for offense. This can temporarily be rectified by Dutch, but once he bites the dust, and he'll be super easy to kill off (especially since you beefed up the Lothal), you're left with a stressed out 45pt actionless Lothal that doesn't scare anyone. Sure, he's going to take forever to kill, but he's not going to do much killing.

have you tried R2D2 crew? much better than chewie as it works when you remember he's on there after turn one. Chewie is great for the price, but I've had R2 give me shield after shield.

Although with R2 and Deflectors, you could be saving 2 shields a turn might be even better. you'd have to try it. I still think Kanan is the boss.

How do you plan on keeping biggs alive? The main reason to take Kanan is that he reduces the attacks made on Biggs, thus you limit the target shots on your VCX because they'll have to keep shooting at Biggs.

I tend to run Kanan with Advanced Sensors to insure he gets his action. As long as no one else stresses him, its fairly effective.

True but you have a 3/8 chance of flipping one of your hits face-up. On a zero-agility block like the Ghost, you accumulate hits quickly meaning you are unlikely to end the turn on 0 shields but also no damage cards. Big ships can be crippled by cumulative crits. R2-D2 and Chewie cost the same amount but Chewie is the safer bet as you can discard a hit (or better still a crit) and recover a shield. R2 would need to roll well 3 times in a row to exceed Chewie.

someone's missing the point of Biggs :P

The problem I have with Chewy crew is he's 4 points, you only get to use him once but you have 10 hull. A lot of crits are going to get through.

My suggestion is to upgrade Lothal to Kanan and take rec spec. You'll either cut down an attack at range 1/2 or get to roll a green dice at 3. You can use him to cut down damage on other ships as well. Because you subtract a dice you have a 100% chance of reducing damage and think you'll avoid a lot more hits this way.
