Repaint dice?

By Schyzo Kitty, in X-Wing

As per title of the topic, can you repaint your dice?

Will you be able to play them in tournaments?

They wouldn't be tournament legal.

Interesting question.

May I ask why you'd want to in the first place?

Red/green colorblind - makes it a pain to pick the right dice up to start rolling.

Red/green colorblind?

That could be one of the reasons, but the main one is to just bring some variety to the table. Also, I would probably repaint them white with red and green symbols, which would make them that much easier to find. And You would just know which ones are yours

I think they'd be tournament legal (unless it counts as tampering), but you couldn't prove they were tournament legal as you can't prove their the originals.

I'd not risk it. I have some 3rd party dice which are obviously not legal, but I like them. I always have my original set of dice on hand so I can use them.

I wouldnt allow it

Paint can mess up the weighting of the dice, so most TOs probably wouldn't allow it.

In the event of color-blindedness, people would be more than willing to help out, even to just gather your dice for you. It's not like they could cheat, as it'd be super easy to tell whether you've rolled evades on your attack roll... plus, you'd probably both be sharing dice, which is a perfectly legal (and sometimes preferable) action to take in a tournament setting.

For casual play you'd be fine, but again, weighting could present a concern. Even the smallest imperfections have a statistically significant impact on the dice results over time.

They would not be tournament legal:

• Players may mark dice with a permanent or indelible marker to indicate ownership in an unobtrusive manner, but cannot otherwise alter them in any way.

I'm red/green colorblind. I usually don't have a prob with the stock dice but every once in a while I'll throw greens instead of reds and vice versa. when I'm having trouble, I look at the symbols.

You need to get your hands on the gold and silver ones that the dude who played in Aus Nats finals was using...

(I believe they were his brother's, and awarded at some official tournie)

Ah... just googled... seems that (as of 7 months ago), there was only 16 sets in existence - "World's finalists"

You should be able to modify the dice with permanent markers... So you should be able to color them with a sharpie and get rid of the red/green issue.

The dice aren't perfectly balanced out of the box and adding a bit of paint sure won't have much of an impact.

I wouldn't have a problem with it

I know a few folks that have colored in the symbols on both red and green dice with Sharpie to distinguish their dice. For the red/green colorblind, I'd color the green dice blue with permanent marker.

If its just casual and you're not playing in an "official" tournament, you're welcome to pick up aftermarket dice like the Nerd-X ones, or sagaborn's. I think only Nerd-x makes black and white dice though.

I've "lost" 3 or 4 dice now, and never really been sure if it was me or my opponent who lost them, and I got sick of it, so I painted all my pips silver for the express purpose of identifying which dice are mine and which are my opponents'.

At tournaments I've always pointed this out to my opponents and offered to share 1 set of dice if its an issue. So far I've never found anyone who had an issue with it (really, adding more weight to the sides with the pips makes it more likely to roll blanks, if anything  ).

Its a shame that you can't buy translucent dice - so you could swap one dice color to translucent ones.

FFG, PLEASE BE MORE INCLUSIVE TO COLOR-BLIND PPL

Red/Green dice are a poor choice if there is no alternative for players...

Being both spectrums of color blind, I personally run into this problem all the time and it drives me up a wall sometimes

I know it will never happen but there are days that I wish FFG would put out a set of dice that are not red green or heck even in armada freaking blue

That might come off as suspicious, altering the weight of dice. Are you able to discern there differences between the original dice and the frosted, clear FFG prize dice? Buying a set of those from eBay and pairing the original red OR green dice with the frosted counterpart might solve this problem.
