Are the trees on the SoB island map meant to block line of sight and grant shadowcloak?

Not the tree tiles but the drawn on trees on the island map. We started a campaign last night and the first thing we did was Cerrinoth Sea I think it was called. The overlord starts with 2 master sorcerers and it seems way too tough for the first map. The overlord builds up a ton of threat while you spend 3 or 4 turns just getting on to the island and then he puts all his monsters in trees and runs the sorcerers away while spawning. Not to mention undying and the fact that you're not really geared at all yet. We were thinking maybe if the trees were just supposed to be decoration this would fix the problem, but so far the island maps seem strange to play, especially because it's not random, they built that to be the first island map you have access to. Also it tells you to use the cavern entrance tile and the whirlpool tile at the same time, had us lookin' for the second piece for a while.
