I'm thinking that if you have the defensive quality from 2 different pieces of gear you use the higher rank of defensive...say defensive 2 from gear x and defensive 1 from gear y, then you would have defensive 2 overall, and that +2 defense would be added to the 1 or 2 black dice from say armor... is that correct? Not sure because defensive is worded as increasing melee defense (deflection increases ranged defense) not sure of the order of precedence of the stacking and increasing rules here
Stacking Defensive?
***shrugs***
The whole thing is being reviewed someone mentioned. Who would've guessed having the word Defense and the word Defensive work out to be two different things mechanically is a bad idea.....
I'd do what makes you feel good...
Pretty sure by the errata/comments we've got so far it goes (Fixed defense value, e.g. Armour or Cover) + (Highest single Defensive/Deflection quality) + (Any other sources).
So if you have Armoured Clothing (Def 1) and are in Full Cover (Def 2), wielding a Vibrosword (Def +1) and Riot shield (Def +2), you get melee defence:
[1 or 2] [+1 or +2] = 4.
However if you were being shot at, you could stack on the +1 from Sixth Sense too to get 5. Except vehicle defence caps at 4... not sure if personal does too.
It clearly does need looking at given the rules mean Stormtroopers in laminate gain more benefit from taking cover than a smuggler in armoured clothing.

Q: The rulebook states that different sources of defense don't stack. Is this referring to different sources of personal defense, such as multiple layers of armor, or to any sources of defense, such as armor and cover.
A: Unless a source of defense specifically states that it stacks with other sources of defense, then it does not stack. Armor and cover, for example, do not stack; a character can only benefit from one of these sources of defense at a time.
Stacking Defense
Question asked by Braendig:
3 Brawn
Sentinel: Shien Expert
1 Rank Defensive Training
Wearing Armored Robes
Wielding a Riot Shield (Left Hand) and a
Shoto Lightsaber with a fully Modified
Lorridian Gemstone and a
fully Modified Curved Hilt ? And why? How would the various defenses stack?"
Answered by Sam Stewart:
Ranged Defense 2
Melee Defense 3
The modified lightsaber would be the source of the defense, because it has the highest ranged and melee defenses. The shoto lightsaber has no innate defense, but the Llordian Gemstone comes with Defensive 1. Its mods allow you to increase the weapon’s defense. Same goes for the curved hilt, its mods also allow you to increase the weapon’s defense.
All of the other defensive sources are from different items, and do not stack.
