Komori Summoner [Updated Path for Bat]

By Derrigan Bluewave, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Komori Summoner [shugenja]

Because the founder of the Bat Clan was trained as a Mantis Shugenja, the Komori Shugenja school shares many of the lessons taught by their Great Clan ally. However, the Komori focus on a new aspect of magic unrefined by the Mantis. Komori, the master sensei of the school, contemplated the connection between man and animal. Such abilities come naturally to the venerable half-spirit but are more esoteric to his students. But, through hard work, they have managed to achieve some success.

Technique Rank: 3

Replaces: Komori Shugenja 3

A Call to Allies – The Komori Summoner school teaches it’s students that animals can be a major ally, and allows them to affect several at a time. When casting a spell on animals, you will affect an extra number of target animals equal to your School Rank.

I suppose it looks okay mechanically, but I can't understand why the Bat would have any connection to Animals. The Fox are the nature lovers of Rokugan; the Bat's only interests are long-communication and contacting the spirit worlds.

And is a big reason why they are close allies with the Kitsu in the games I run

The bat are living in a very dangerous area, and this path was created for them in a previous edition.

That's a pretty solid argument, I must admit, though I do believe that 3rd edition was infamous for having way too many paths/schools, several of which were considered 'filler' by a lot of players. But, if you or your players like the idea of the path, as long as you got a good story behind it, go with it. Like I said, it is good mechanically.

...and I am wondering why I never saw the connection before! I mean, aside from the Bat not really existing in my game's timeline (Toturi II never died so her failure of a brother never took over and plunged the Empire into the spiral of self-destruction that is it set on now). But seriously, that's a very cool idea, and the Lion would have a Minor clan they can pretend to be friendly with!

The Kitsu's friendship could even lead the Bat to maybe discovering a way to call on local Ghosts or Gaki (Similar, mechanically, to the Kitsu Spirit Legion path, though really different flavor).

I can definitely see this as a Path shared by the Bat and the Kitsune.
