WFRP 3rd ed. brought in a new gamer

By Scelous, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I never thought I would be interested in the Warhammer Fantasy RPG, but 3rd edition has won me over.

I had a burning, passionate, all-consuming hatred for WFRP 2nd edition. I bought the books (3 or 4 of them) based solely on how much role-players were raving about it, read through the books, nearly vomited, tried to run a game, nearly vomited, and then sold them promptly on Half.com As far as I was concerned, WFRP was complete and total trash, one of the worst systems I had ever seen in my life, and I assumed I would never be going near the WF universe ever again.

When FFG announced they had acquired Warhammer Fantasy, I shrugged. "Who cares," I thought. Has absolutely no bearing on me. Then I started seeing the reviews, and the system information, and became more and more interested, until I finally broke down and ordered 3rd edition. I've played it a bit now, and 3rd edition has accomplished something I never thought would happen: I enjoy Warhammer Fantasy. Quite a bit, might I add.

This system you guys have made is really awesome. It's innovative, and I absolutely love the cards and dice and whatnot. Sure, it has its flaws, but I tell you, this is a real diamond. You keep cranking out products for 3rd ed., and I'll keep grabbing them up. I hated 4th edition D&D, and was growing tired of 3.5 (and Pathfinder), and I wasn't sure where to look for a good fantasy RPG. WFRP 3rd edition is working for me, and is filling the gap.

Thanks, FFG, for this great system. I know you're picking up flak from the old grognards, but there are plenty of us who are appreciative, especially those of us who hated what came before. You guys are paving the way for the RPG community.

I am glad you like the new edition. Of my group 4 of 6 of them where negative about the new WHFRP. After a quick demo last week, they completely changed their stance, and are now talking about buying their own warhammer box. They are truly excited about the game. Still have one die-hard GURPS fan in my group that yet have to try the new edition. But now I am pretty confident that he too will come around. gran_risa.gif

Wow, some of what you posted makes me think you're my evil clone. Evil because I didn't vomit at V2 and ran a camapign. I've always liked warhammer and suffered through the dull percentile system. But disliking the old system, disliking D&D 4th edition and even getting bored with Pathfinder is exactly where I was before I found this gem.

I too have liked the grim/dark/gritty aspect of Warharmmer (punny humour not so much, twins and such in plots not so much) but always felt bleh about system, this system rocks. Yes, the rule books need a re-write, but ultimately that it's a game to be played without having to look at rulebooks all the time compensates for that and then some.

Glad you like the new system. I think you're doing the old system a massive injustice, but I don't want to buried under a tide of fanboi so I'll just agree to disagree

i like it, too. I HAVE too i spent 70 Euro for the core box and 28 Euro for the Adeventurers Kit (which arrived today!!!).

As you said, it is a diamond whis has to be polished, but with some own rules and tweaking on some not clarfied issues it's a great system and easy to adapt your own rules, talents, careers etc.

I would ay that im on the same wagon, i love Warhammer setting since Fantasy Batles 5th edition, but the prior RPG incarnations ( !st and 2nd edition) hadnt intereted me, i wouldnt say that were bad sitems, but for example 1st edition setting was antoher setting braely based on Warhammer, even had another plot line so was as an alternative Warhammer where even Karl franz died, on 2nd edition that was fixed, but still has i couldnt get into, but ive run a couple of mini campaigns with 2nd edition, this dispise all the changes is imbued on the setting, at least more than 1st edition.

Hi everyone,

Like the OP I too was won over with 3rd ed. I had played 1st ed but loss interest when new supplements were not forthcomming. By the time 2nd ed came out I had moved on to other systems. With the advent of this new version I have purchased the huge box set on amazon ($62 and free shipping!). I literally felt the exhuberance of a 7 year old upon seeing not only the size of the box, but its contents. I have been pouring over the rules and going online to find whatever supports are available. Needless to say, Im gearing up to run this for my gaming group (we mostly play World of Darkness).

So, to FFG, thank you for bringing me back to my all time favorite fantasy rpg setting.

Incidentally I just purchased the Adventurer's Toolkit on amazon for $19 w/ free shipping!!

(EDIT: ARGH, I hate it when a board eats your post!)

As a long time D&D player, who is also heavily invested in Pathfinder, I was drawn by the new mechanics. I've been looking for a fantasy RPG that had less emphasis on 'magic items' and gear, that also was broke down some of the barriers to introducing the hobby to people outside of it. While this hasn't been my personal challenge, I've had so many people turn away from complex character sheets and walls and walls of text and rules. "I just want to play and have fun", is the common remark I've heard. Usually they're willing to learn some rules, there has to be a quick pay-off in fun to draw them and get them motivated to learn more. While I was only passingly familiar (at best) with the Warhammer setting, these things about the new system made me want to take a gamble on it.

Also, it seemed like a good time to 'break into' a new game. I too was delighted when I opened up my big box of stuff.
