Hello all. I posted this homebrew school for the Gyushi Family of the Spider Clan awhile back when the AEG RPG Homebrew forums were still active.

So just re-posting it to those that might want to use it in their RPG group.

"Gyushi, once known as Chuda Gyushi, and then Daigotsu Gyushi, the man who now simply goes by Gyushi was granted the right to found his own Family after he had forged the Ancestral Armor of the Spider Clan. A shugenja who favors the Fire element, Gyushi is forging his family just like he forges his blades, by carefully selecting its individual members and slowly increasing pressure on them until they become as strong as steel. The Gyushi continue to forge blades and armors for the Daigotsu, while simultaneously performing the role of a shugenja Family for the Spider Clan."

Gyushi Death Smith Shugenja School

-Benefit: +1 Intelligence

-Skills: Calligraphy (Cipher), Craft: Armorsmithing, Craft: Weaponsmithing, Lore: Theology, Mediation, Spellcraft and any one Weapon Skill.

-Honor: 1.5

-Outfit: Suitable Robes, Wakizashi, any one weapon, Scroll Satchel, Traveling Pack, 3 koku

-Affinity/Deficiency: Fire / Air

-Technique: Tools of Death - The Gyushi learn how to unlock the hidden power within weapons. You may spend a Void Point as a Free Action to grant you and all allies within 20' of you the ability to re-roll 1's once on damage rolls with melee weapons. You may spend a Fire Spell Slot in conjunction with the Void Point to grant this ability on damage rolls with range weapons as well. This effect last for a number of rounds equal to your School Rank (Multiple uses of this technique doesn’t stack but 'resets the duration). Lastly, you gain a Free Raise on any spell with the Craft keyword.

-Spells: Sense, Commune, Summon, 3 Fire, 2 Earth and 1 Water.

Okay, first off, I will admit to absolutely hating the Spider Clan, so much so that I almost left L5R when they were made an official part of Rokugan (I was starting to get into the Card game, but stopped, while I continue playing the RPG). So understand how serious I am say I registered here just so I can say this school looks awesome. I may just utilize this in my own setting as a minor clan, if I could think of a good backstory/animal symbol for it.

A few pointers: I'd allow the technique to work for all weapons normally, not just melee. Also, while re-rolling 1's is a cool idea, I fear it might be too uncommon to be really notable or useful for a party, especially seeing as effect is pretty short duration. Instead, I would probably suggest spending the Void Point adds +1k0 to all Weapon Damage rolls, while spending the Fire Spell Slot adds the Re-rolling 1's effect. (Considering the School's affinity is for Fire Spells, asking for that specific spell slot is a pretty high price).
