Flying 3 Imp Aces

By VaynMaanen, in X-Wing

Curious on everyone's thoughts on lists with 3 Imperial Aces, or for that matter 3 Aces in general. Are they not as common in the top tables because of difficulty in flying that archetype, or is it just that much better to enhance 2 aces with a support ship like a Palp Shuttle?

They're really strong, but the Palp Shuttle is probably just a bit stronger. In games where the dice are with you, you'll do better with triple aces; but consistency is much more important in high-level play, and Palpatine gives you exactly that. Besides which, the shuttle has its uses as both a decoy to draw fire and a blocker; it fills a niche that triple ace lists simply don't have.

I think it can be harder since you need to average 33 points per ace so you probably have to cut some corners from typical builds.

Like no stealth on soontir, or no engine on vader, or no fcs on whisper, etc.

I think they are really fun to fly. My current go to list is Vader, Inqusitor, Vessery x7

I've enjoyed running Vessery T/D, Inquisitor, and Omega Leader. Target locks for Vessery everywhere!

Imperial triple aces are a strong list but they aren't very forgiving because palp isn't around to babysit. I really enjoy flying my triple aces though, they are as satisfying to play as they are difficult. I use Whisper, Carnor, O-Leader. I initially started flying it to counter all the Palp Aces I was seeing.

I stopped flying them for a few months during the Torp Scout Scourge but since that has died down in my area I have brought them back out and they are still very competitive though lists with lots of HP can be a struggle; double VCX, Triple Hounds, Double Deci. I know a lot of people in my area dread Dengaroo, I don't sweat it so much. Carnor and O-Leader give him a hell of a time and as long as I fly Whisper carefully and she can shoot at him out of arc he goes down pretty fast.

I also like that there are a lot of different pilots that you can slot into a triple aces list for Imperials and they generally well as long as you fly them well.

All that being said; if I had a Palpatine card I would probably run some variation of Palp Aces instead, it is just more forgiving of mistakes.

I flew classic Soontir,Carnor and Omega with good results. 3 aces are difficult to play, but extremely fun

My personal favorite has been the standard soontir, standard omega leader with stealth, and then inquisitor with PTL, title, autothrusters, and a proton rocket. 98 points so you can win initiative from time to time and everything in the list is a pain to hit.

I flew 3 Imperial Aces for a long time and there are two answers:

1) Classic three Aces are not worth it anymore without Palp (Soontir, Vader, Inquisitor) - also meta is really hard against them right now. There are a lot of tools punishing nimble and fragile ships based on action economy.

2) 3 Defender Aces or 2 Defenders Aces and Classic Ace are in a good spot and you should be able to comfortably win with them.

So, as long as at least 2 of your 3 Aces fly in Defenders you should be fine.

I still like it, but it will be in trouble against a some of this new scum shenanigans. My favourite is:

Soontir + title + AT + PTL + TC (34 pts)

Vader + title + ATC + EU (34 pts)

Inquisitor + title + AT + PTL (31 pts)

99pts. These ships all get bonus actions and will likely fire first against most lists in the current meta. Also, each of these ships can do well in end game or on their own.

I know Defenders are hot like Hansel right now, but like Derek Zoolander, they have one look. Their k-turns are easy to predict.

Vader is also good cause he loves that target lock.

I actually like to play 4 aces (if you count wampa)

TIE Fighter: · "Wampa" (14)

TIE Avanced Prototype: · The Inquisitor (25)

Push The Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

TIE/v1 (1)

TIE/fo Fighter: · "Zeta Leader" (20)

Juke (2)

Comm Relay (3)

TIE Advanced: · Darth Vader (29)

Adaptability (Increase) (0)

TIE/x1 (0)

Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

I have had better luck with this then 2x ace palp. But have not flown it in a while.

I just flew this at a local tournament and did pretty well.

Tie Interceptor: Carnor Jax (34)

Push the Limit (3)

Royal Guard Tie

Autothrusters (2)

Hull Upgrade (3)

Tie Defender: Rexlar Brath (37)

Tie/x7 (-2)

Juke (2)

Tie/fo : Omega Leader (29)

Juke (2)

Comm Relay (3)

Stealth Device (3)

People get scared of Carnor so they normally do whatever it takes to take him out which usually leaves Rex and Omega to sit back and do a lot of damage. It's fun to play.

For awhile I flew turr, jax and fel and it's a strong list. I flew it because I wanted to practice interceptors. When flown well very nasty, but very unforgiving.

Truthfully emperor shuttle is insurance for when your dice fail, and as mentioned it still has 3 attack dice, and is a good blocker. The stop function on it is pretty sweet. Great way to clog up the lanes.

Both squads are nasty, but if you want insurance on those green dice emperor is the way to go

Trip aces is strong but VERY unforgiving, and even if you fly perfectly, still subject to the vagaries of green dice. I've flown it for a long while previously, and gone off it on account of that. Two aces and a support ship is better IME.

Palp Aces is easy mode, it requires a lot less thought to fly than 3 dedicated Aces. Fel can roll 1 evade and eye and 2 blanks and it can be turned into 4 evades using Palp. I think Palp should be Epic only...but that's just me.

With Zuckuss being used so much I have strayed away from triple aces. You need tokens and lots of them to survive the Zuckuss threat. There's no real way to deal with that without an x7 defender and/or Palp. My current most successful list is Carnor/Ryad/BafflePalp.
