1-off?

By SolkaTruesilver, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I want to show friends the Campaign side of Imperial Assault. But i am not sure some of them will commit to a continuous campaign. They probably just wanna give it a try for funs and giggles.

I was thinking of first running them through the "get the basics" scenario. But then. Is the 1st mission sufficiently fun to properly represent the game?

If you're talking about the little demo scenario in the learn-to-play guide then I would say that, no, it's not a very good representation of the actual game.

But if you're talking about the first campaign mission, Aftermath, then I would say that it would be a great place to start. You'd be missing out on some of the fun parts of a full campaign (leveling up your rebels, buying items, etc.) but as a one-off mission Aftermath is pretty balanced and doesn't have any weird moving parts that would get in the way of a new player learning the game.

Edit: Do these players already know the skirmish side of the game? If so, another option might be to run a side mission using the setup rules for twin shadows (i.e. give the players 3XP each and 400 credits per hero to do some upgrades before the mission starts). This would let them get a taste of the upgrade stage as well, and it would let them use more of their heroes' abilities. If they're completely new players, though, I would recommend just going straight into Aftermath as if you were actually starting a regular campaign.

When I was teaching this at a con last year, I enjoyed running the Under Siege mission from the base campaign as the Imperial player (per recommendation of others). I would just give everyone a few XP so they didn't start as vanilla (and a little money to go shopping first) and then take the matching number of XP as the Imperial Player. It's a fun scenario, with more going on than the starting one. Plus Darth Vader comes out at the end, but with not a lot of time to wreak havoc. I also think it's in favor of the Rebels, as I haven't won in a few tries (they have been close) so everyone feels good at the end because it's not a lopsided mission in favor of The Empire.

If you don't have the small campaigns like bespin or Tattoonie. The first mission is great as a tutorial but doesnt really have enough depth or exciting moments to really work as a showcase.

I would maybe suggest is play on of the side missions. Pretend that the group won the first mission Aftermath and has gotten the exp reward and the item rewards and are now doing their first side mission. For example like Han Solo's mission that comes with his model.

The side missions (excluding the hero based ones like getting the light saber) are all mostly stand alone.

Playing one-off side missions would be fine. You can use the XP and credit table laying around or use the minicampaign setup rules.

You're also not limited to side missions. I used the agenda side mission Back-Room Bargains as an intro mission to an extended Bespin Gambit campaign. (Unfortunately I played with one too low threat level, so it was mainly only challenging for me.)

Hunted Down from Twin Shadows bc Han and Boba are both involved. And get the models.
