Paths for Minor Clans

By Derrigan Bluewave, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

It is rare for a Minor Clan to be able to support more than one School. I get that. But even a Minor Clan should have some variety, and partly that can be achieved with a Path or two.

While some of the Minor Clans have received a path, like the Badger, Dragonfly, and Tortoise, sme, like the Tiger, Bat, Boar, Monkey, Snake, and of course the "Lost" Minor Clans, like Bee, Shark, Firefly, Raven, Tanuki and Salamaner, didn't even have that.

Do people have any ideas for paths for these Minor Clans?

I'd just use ronin techniques

I was thinking about adding a path that would be able to send something like a flare up, to be seen from miles away, for the Firefly Clan. But first, is there a non-magical way to send flares? I know the Empire hates gaijin pepper, but is this something that could evade under the radar? If so, would using a Simple Action to activate it is enough? Would a path that allows you to activate it as a Free Action a good enough Path?

Hanabi, which are fireworks.

YES! I thought i remembered fireworks being part of the setting, it's just that who is allowed to produce them is very restricted.

Fairly certain the answer to that question is "the Agasha family."

Really? For some reason I have the scorpion clan being allowed to do so stuck in my head

According to Secrets of the Dragon, only the Tamori are allowed. And while it was the Agasha who introduced this, it might be that with their change of allegiance to the phoenix, they were no longer allowed to trade in Hanabi.

Ah thank you. Anything before 4th is beyond my knowledge

I think that might have been changed in Great Clans or Emerald Empire; I will check and get back to this.

EDIT: I have not found anything to contradict this, though I find it unusual for the Agasha to suddenly stop dealing in hanabi. I would assume that both families create hanabi.

Atlas of the Empire does contradict this. After joining the Phoenix, the Agasha were given Orange Flame Village by the Shiba, who did not think it of much value, but realized the new family needed holdings of their own. The Agasha, however, discovered it was a goldmine of rare materials they needed to make fireworks, and were so pleased they held a Fireworks festival for the commoners, and do so every year, climaxing the festivities with a giant orange phoenix-shaped firework (which inspired the peasants to change the village's name to what it is now). The Tamori are still probably the masters of the art of Hanabi, but the Agasha are likely a close second.

As for the path relating to flares, I'd say it's a bad idea, for a few reasons. First off you should be able to do something like set off a Hanabi-Flare in the Defense stance as either a Simple Action (if all you doing it setting one on fire that is already set up) or a Complex Action (if you have to stand the thing up, set it off, and hopefully get away). But, most importantly, is that Hanabi are not Flares. Not close. They are expensive, pretty, rare, expensive, complex to use, and did I mention expensive. Flares are a fairly modern invention; there has been historic examples of using Fireworks and the like for signaling, but the Flares your thinking of, in which you fire one from a gun or a stick or the like, are very modern. Old fireworks and the like were cumbersome and dangerous even for experts, and using them freely as signal devices in fire-prone Rokugan is not likely to be looked kindly upon. And, like I said, they are expensive. The Dragon and Phoenix are the only clans able to produce them (with the reclusive Dragon being the major makers), and they require alchemtic knowledge. Even among the Dragon and Phoenix, Hanabi are rare outside of festivals. I've only heard of Imperial court a few other festivals outside of Dragon lands even having Hanabi. I'd find it hard to believe a minor clan, especially one described as poor like the Firefly, could afford to buy such expensive works of art for use as singles. Now that I think about it, I remember reading the Firefly use large bonfires to single one another, likely in something similar to a lighthouse's flashing, so they could have the need for long distance communication covered.

That is fine, I was raising the question before I had any idea that the Hanabi was so expensive.

Bee - A path that allows them to insult a courtier to give them penalties, without incurring a duel. As masters of art critique, they should be able to use their knowledge to offer insult without going too far.
