TIE Defender is now canon: Battlefront!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

19:38 onwards. It's an NPC vehicle / pickup BUT IT'S THERE.

TIE DEFENDERS ARE OFFICIALLY PART OF THE STAR WARS CANON.

As others said, it was already canon. Now it's going mainstream.

Being a TIE Fighter (PC game) veteran, I love the TIE Defender, but I find it misplaced there... :/

You know there is a perfect imperial ship they could have used instead, right?

A ship much more similar with the B-Wing's stats and perfectly adequate in time frame...

A ship with a huge following of cultists fans that want to resurrect it make it canon again from the deeps of the forsaken Legends...

A ship that would make many old SW space sim players buy that game, even with it's evident shallowness...

Sigh. Now they will start whining why it needs to be mentioned in every thread...

But I didn't even mention the sacred name of you-know-what-ship.

"fear of a name is stupid." -Gandalf, while flying an assault gunboat, 2006

Also pretty sure given that you can't fly Y-wings/B-wings/TIE bombers/TIE defenders, they wouldn't let you anywhere near the controls for the Gunboat. not without another dlc pack.

I WOULD PAY 100 DOLLARS TO FLY A GUNBOAT IN BATTLEFRONT GRAPHICS.

You don't need to fly them... having those beautiful metal angels escorting you is a bless already.

If they went to the trouble of modeling them, I really hope they slap together some interior cockpit designs and just let them be playable.

They were canon when FFG released them in the Imperial aces pack too.

This is debatable, I think. Some true confirmation on that would be nice however.

Disney made it very clear that every Star Wars product had to be approved by LFL to ensure it fit the story they were trying to tell. I serioudly doubt FFG can release a priduct without their blessing.

That means anything released after wave 4 (after not including) has to be canon.

That assumes that "Blessing" = "Canon". Which it may not.

That's a fair point, but it goes into dangerous territory. We can't assume the events of Dark Forces, Shadows of The Empire, and so on, are canon because of the involvement of characters and ships.

Not that I don't want to believe these things are canon. I most certainly do want to.

EDIT: I'll be real though, it most certainly helps that the Bryar Pistol has made an appearance, canonically, in Battlefront. She's a beauty too.

I'm 100% sure toys like LEGO sets, action figures or X-wing TMG can't canonize a thing, that's imply K-wings and E-wings, with the ship descriptions and their pilots are canon, which clearly doesn't fit the new post Endor history.

It's not even true that every Disney approved media is canon, see The Freemakers Adventures for an example.

What appears on FFG X-Wing products are just ship names and pilot names. Nothing of the background behind those names.

After all, Han Solo is in the game but that doesn't canonize all what he did in the post-Endor EU.

There is a bit of ship background on generic pilots, plus FFG's expansion descriptions.

I am reading the generics for the K-Wing, E-Wing, TIE Punisher, TIE Defender... Basically they only mention the ship technical capabilities, manufacturer, main roles, or performance.

At no place they mention the New Republic, Imperial Remnant, or the background of any of their pilots. Only the Black Eight TIE Punisher mentions the planet Callos and the TIE Phantom Sigma Squadron mentions Imdaar Alpha, but neither state anything about them.

In particular, it is noticeable that the K-Wing is explicitly addressed as a ship of the "Rebellion" in the flavor text in the package, while in the EU, the K-Wing was used by the New Republic first more than a decade after the Return of the Jedi, that certainly was not a rebellion anymore. So it seems that the K-Wing has been retrofitted to the Rebellion, probably in the same way that the A-Wing and B-Wing have been moved back to pre-Episode IV rebel ships in the new canon (And those "Callos" and "Imdaar Alpha" could be reintroduced in the new canon in the same way that new canon B-Wing retains it's "Project Shantipole" name from the EU, but adapting it to the new lore)

For some reason, FFG restricted themselves (or were restricted by LFL) from mentioning events or factions from post Endor years, only retaining ships designs and pilot names. This definitely points at some plans on discarding the old EU already going underway by the time FFG started with X-Wing, or at least wave 3-4 with the introduction of the HWK, E-Wing, TIE Phantom and TIE Defender.

Was that 2013/2014? Makes sense.

So I'd say even when FFG releasing a ship doesn't really make canon everything that ship was involved with, it seems pretty safe to state that it is likely canon that there is a ship called like that, with that aspect, with that role, that at some point was used by that faction, and might or might not have been piloted by someone called by these names.

I wouldn't be even surprised to see another rebel cell in Rebels using K-Wings and E-Wings by the time the series' events occur.
