Star Wars: Armada - Vassal module version 4.2.0

By Green Knight, in Star Wars: Armada

FYI: In the 'Game Pieces' multi-tab panel, Objectives -> Navigation: 'Doomed Station' is listed as 'Dommed Station'. (This typo is not repeated from the instant-spawn menu)

Dear all,

I have some issues since 3.11. that Vassal is creating the tiles not in my local profile (as it was before) but in my roaming profile. Unfortunately, I am not a microsoft guru, so that I can not explain it better but maybe this is enough information to help me? If I start or shut down my laptop, it takes 10minutes or more in the moment as it saves my profile to the server (I use this laptop also for work) and Vassal creates 2GB and more of data.

Does someone experience the same?

Best,

b2w

Did you reinstall VASSAL or update to a new version?

Your system administrators may have made a change to ensure that everything gets backed up on the server.

I had only updated the module. It seems that vassal creates a some 200mb folder for every module-version which I am looking at. So if I play with someone on 3.11.0, I will get an additional folder. As long as I (and the other player) stays at 3.11.1, there is no issue and I have only the one folder.

Module version 3.12.0 is available!

I have it working on my PC, but noticed Vassal is also on Mac, anyone know how to download the module onto Mac?

Same module should work in either place - the .vmod file is basically just images and scripting. So pick up VASSAL for Mac and load the same source. SHOULD work, anyway...

I get an error message when trying to install the extensions (first time install of everything for me). It does not allow me to install either map extension. Thoughts?

EDIT: I manually created the extension folder based on what your video shows and it seems to have worked that way.

There is no need to manually create folders. Just add the extension to the module and the folder is created.

I understand. following the video instructions however I was getting an error message and couldn't install the extensions.

I'm trying to install Vassal and the Armada module for the first time. What of these files do I need to download?

  • 3.12 Files
    • ArmadaModule_-_3.12.0.vmod
    • ArmadaExtension_AltMapSizesPack_2.5.1.vmdx
    • ArmadaExtension_MapPack_2.5.0.vmdx
  • 3.10 Files
    • Armada_graphics_pack_v3.10.0.zip

Are there any other tutorials besides the SWAE videos? I've got that queued up. But maybe there's something written too?

(I've tried to install Vassal on my Mac before with no success. Last time, Vassal itself was super buggy and issued errors after almost every mouse click. And I could never figure out how to get Armada on screen, much less start a game. But with corona virus social distancing and work slowdowns, my regular partner and I want to give this a go.)

You need the 3.12.0.vmod - that is the actual Vassal Module . Without that you don't have anything but the Vassal system. To get that to install you get into the Vassal launcher and go File->Open Module (or maybe File->Import Module) and give it a while to load.

The MapPack_2.5.0 is an extension , it contains a bunch of extra backgrounds with pretty pictures. To add that, you right-click on the module in the launcher, select "Add Extension" and go through there. When you next launch the module it will take a while to load. You'll also see a little button next to the module which expands the library list, showing what extensions are added to each module.

The AltMapSizesPack_2.5.1 is another extension , so same installation as the MapPack. It contains exactly what it says; backgrounds for non 3x6 playing areas (3x3, 6x4, 8x4, 9x3).

The graphics_pack you don't need any more. It is now included in the module itself.

Thanks. I'll delete that graphics pack.

I followed the SWAE video 1 and got it installed, setup (ignoring all the stuff about using WINRAR to extract and add graphics packs and whatnot), running, and watched a minute of someone's game. I don't know what's changed, but it's already working much better than it did a year ago. No bugs or crashing with Vassal on my iMac.

Now to watch Video 2 to maybe learn the rudiments of setting up a game.

Any macOS players of Vassal that can point to keyboard shortcut reference list for Vassal? So far, some quick keys work and some don't. It seems the CTRL-Arrow commands don't work for me.

I used to play it on Mac, but I don't anymore. I think a lot of the shortcuts just didn't work and had no alternative, unfortunately. Have you tried the "command" key instead of Ctrl? I remember trying that, can't remember if it worked or not. PC is just much easier, unfortunately.

I tried the Command and other modifier keys to no success. It's a bummer if they don't work. Not having quick access to navigation tool shortcuts will really slow the game down.

Yeah, right-clicking everything makes you want to cry. Can you get a PC keyboard to work with your Mac? Only solution I can think of. I also haven't actually tried it.

When I played on my mac, I had to go into the Keyboard menu under General Settings....and deactivated most of the keyboard gestures/shortcuts there.

I seem to recall that with those disabled, VASSAL was much happier with accepting Command keys, etc.

I deactivated Ctrl Left Arrow, for example , which trigger Expose (window management) and enabled speed change or something like that.

But I can't figure out how to get Nav Tool rotations to work from the keyboard.

I'll try to dig around some more for other Mac commands that might be confusing the Vassal system.
