Computer Games

By David Spangler, in The Crystal Ball and The Wishing Well

A bit over a year ago FFG announced they were undertaking to make computer versions of some of their board games. I believe Tide of Iron was going to be the first, which would truly be awesome. Since then there's been no word. It takes time to do a good computer game these days (my daughter works as an animator for a computer game company and their current game will have taken four years to produce by the time it's finally released next year), so I haven't been counting the minutes...but still, it would be nice to hear if this is still a viable direction the company is taking and what games might be in the works. I'd love a TI computer game, Arkham Horror would be nice, etc.

Has anyone else heard anything about this or have any news? Or any suggestions of possible game ideas?

Why should I play ToI on a Computer? If I want to have strategic/tactic fights, there are games dedicated to that and build for using computer features, so better than a boardgame transition in any usable time could.

Good computer games use its features good and I dont mean shiny graphics.
The good board games use board game features like direct social interaction, pushing miniatures around, cursing your opponent, rolling dice, bluffing etc.

So let the board games keep board games and the computer games computer games.

But they could do some special computer games with their themes, but I dont think they will do so.

And by the way computer games dont have to be builded that long. Only the games relying on graphic spectacles take so long, but graphic is not important. Descent 1, Diablo 2, Starcraft, Stunts, Baldurs Gate 1, Warhammer: Dark Omen dont have their lasting communities (10 years and longer after release) due to graphic that was shiny at release but due to their gameplay.
And I must say, that in my opinion no "big" game in the last years will survive a decade. Crysis will be forgotten, MW2 will be forgotten, DA will be forgotten. But in ten years the people will still play Baldurs Gate, Stunts, Starcraft, Diablo 2, Descent.

Not to forget Civilization in that list....

I DO know a computer program that lets you play board games online called VASSAL. It's not bad and even has some games that are licensed on it. Basically you move pieces around on a board just like any board game, you just have to know the rules. For example I could create a map for Descent on it and some tokens for heroes and monsters. To move a piece you drag it from where it is to where you want it to go. The program can even generate dice rolls. Everyone would have to understand the rules though cause the program doesn't care how far you move, where you move, or even if you move off the map, all it does is hold the board and pieces for you. Simple, but very effective.

First rule of business: Find something you do well and then market it in such a way where people pay you to do it.

I would HATE to see FFG break from their roots and start investing in something that quite honestly I do not think anyone would buy. I will admit that an online version of Arkham Horror would be AMAZING if done right, and that I MIGHT be tempted to buy it, but that temptation stops at that title.

I would say that FFG is most likely creating computer game versions of their boardgames more as a marketing push than anything else. A few board game companies are already doing this on Xbox Live. Settler's of Catan, Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are a few on there. Panzer General was recently released on Xbox Live and in board game format almost simultaneously and I think if you bought one, you got a discount on the other (I may be mistaken). Anyway, making computer versions of the board games could help drive video gamer's interest in the physical board games. And more gamers is a good thing.

As far as I know, Tide of Iron (i think) and Wings of War were in development with Big Rooster, the same people who were working on the ill-fated Talisman conversion to a video environment. It seems that Big Rooster is no more, and the lack of news is a bit of a shame really.

Perhaps FFG are just biding their time as they often do. Time will ultimately tell...

Recently they were/are looking for someone with Cocoa experience. A hint for an iphone game?

I really hope FFG doesn't scrap its plans to creating computer game versions of their boardgames. I would get so physced if the could release there LCGs in a computer or XBL version!
