Will M9-G8 revitalise the T-65 X-Wing?

By stevensonson, in X-Wing

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No, but I'll have fun with it anyway.

So as soon as this card was spoiled, your old buddy and resident T-65 fanboy started thinking of ways to apply this card to the T-65 in order to actually give them a decent chance.

Obviously it's use as a defensive upgrade makes it a prime target for keeping Biggs alive, so I decided to run with an old school Luke Biggs and Wedge list.

Luke Skywalker (28)
Draw Their Fire (1)
R2-D2 (4)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Biggs Darklighter (25)
R3 Astromech (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)
Wedge Antilles (29)
Predator (3)
M9-G8 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)
Total: 99

The general idea of the list is to take advantage of the versitility that M9-G8 offers by buffing Luke's attack or protecting Biggs, depending on the list I'm against.

If there are a low number of high damage ships (ie Aces, Falcons or Dengar from the hit band 'Dengaroo'), Wedge, moving last can lock onto the most dangerous target that threatens Biggs.

This way, when the ship attacks, a Crit can be left on the board (nommed by Luke), Biggs might be able to evade one with R3, and Wedge can force a reroll of another.

Provided Biggs is at range 3 for the first pass, I think the initial joust strongly favours the X-Wings here. Ok not really, but I can dream goddamn it. At least it will be better than 3 X-Wings normally would fare.

Against Swarms of enemies, Wedge instead locks Luke. This, combined with Predator gives 2 X-Wings very powerful attacks, with Luke even able to reroll a die against Dark Curse, his arch nemesis. Hopefully the X-Wings should be able to wear through enough of the Swarm before Biggs dies to give Luke an easy time mopping up in the endgame.

Anyway, that's my latest attempt to fly a thematic list whilst also not resigning myself to flying garbage.

if by "t-65" you mean "Tarn mison" then yeah

I think I like "Gate" on a y-wing better, unfortunately. Add the ol' reliable ICT and you have a sturdy support ship. Keep it golden or go Dutch, depending on budget........points that is.

Yep, Tarn is the Gatekeeper.

It's not even that good on him, r7 is way better for him plus it's one point less

I don't know why ffg can't come up with an a astromech that makes me want to play it, last one I liked was bb8

Why is it not that goid on him? Why is r7 better? Alk r7 does is reroll more enemy dice once per round

M9g8 actually does things while the enemy ignores tarn AND tarn keeps his TL for when returning fire

R7 only works once per round. M9-G8 works as many times as necessary. Tarn is good for him because no matter who shoots at him, he gets to move the TL. So, you force one red die to re-roll. It's good if you have more than one shooting at him that turn.

only question now is "Where does one put m9g8 Tarn?"

probably with PS 10 poe to give re-rolls that fire before the opponent can shoot Tarn can make you change your mind

you can do

Poe (vi, pattern analyzer, thrusters, r5-p9; black one)

Red Ace (r2-d2, comm relay, integrated)

Tarn (m9g8)

to present no good targets and give yourself two ships that benefit from m9g8 red dice re-roll

would like more punch instead of Red Ace, but without Biggs I don't really trust anyone else to survive

a list with Biggs in it also isn't the worst, as Biggs needs re-rolls on offense too. You could do Tarn Biggs and either some lame 4 ship configuration or one of the fattest mirandas ever (homing, LRS, TLT seismics, extras and c3po)

Yeah but now with that one extra point you could just have biggs with his Droid who will help your squad against torpedoes, a 4 hit torpedo will not be effected too much by rerolling one die. At least r7 on Tarn has more of a mental effect of, oh yeah you rolled great, do it again, lol. And as someone who plays Tarn for fun all the time, I gotta say he is pretty great as a last ship if they ignore him all game.

Why not Autothrusters on Tarn and Integrated on Pava? It doesnt make much sense to take R5x3 otherthan to just eject him.

Tarn doesn't have Boost.

I actually like Luke with Gate and Wedge with R2D2. But its still a 3 xwing list without a whole lot of bite. Maybe Wes instead of Luke.

Duh, completely had a brain fart there.

I might fly it on Biggs. Makes him truly support, if he gets shot at great, if he doesnt, still helps out.

Definitely this.

R7 has cancelled whole attacks for me in the past (oh you rolled a natural 2hit crit? reroll those....ha two blanks!) but the glaring issue is it only works once per round, so if he gets multiple ships looking at him hes considerably easier to remove.

M9 gives him a no-stress Elusiveness on every ship that fires at him, and if hes not going to get shot, he can either TL an enemy to nerf their shooting against allies or TL a buddy to buff their shooting.

The game i had last night i would have loved that. Tarn basically got ignored because my opponent hates him lol. I could have TL'd his flippin' phantom and just screwed with her all day.

If Biggs isn't getting shot at, you've wasted points on him.

only if you're flying Biggs badly. You want him shot at half the time, not all the time.

Thanks, Captain Obvious!

Note that's not incompatible with what I said, which was merely that it's generally bad if Biggs isn't getting shot at (at all).

Biggs not being shot at is usually a specific turn fluke than anything else. Doubt you'd be able to spot hes not going to soak anything on a turn he still has an action to move that TL to a buddy.

Nah, xwing wise i think hes best on Tarn if anybody. Xwings arent good support ships, neither is biggs because his support power is to die first. You dont want your support to die first lol. Tarn basically gets a jammer against everybody with this guy for 1pt less in exchange for potentially making things worse (roll hit to a crit).

I suspect M9 will almost solely appear on an ARC though for double supporty goodness.

I am thinking Tarn is a good spot for him primarily because you can use him to buff a high PS ally and then switch the TL to your enemy later in the turn if Tarn gets targeted. On other pilots, you have to make the call in advance. Tarn gets the best of both worlds.

Shame m9 says you can target lock other friendly ships, would have been fun to have tarn target lock himself to use as a predator re roll until he gets shot at
