Response Re: Redirect Defense Token

Rules Question:

Hello. Another quick question - During the "Spend Defense Tokens" Step, does the Defender have to nominate the Shield that will be Redirected to at that Point in time (Before Critical hits are resolved), or can he simply state he wishes to spend the token, and choose the adjacent shield during the "Take Damage" step? Thankyou.

When a defender spends a redirect token, that defender does not choose which other zone’s shields to suffer the damage on until the Resolve Damage step.

I asked this question on the 15th of April this year, just got a response now, as I have posted it...

I do not even remember who it was in regards to that I was asking for... But someone was wondering if, when you declared the use of the Redirect Token, if you also had to declare then where you were redirecting to.

It seems that, the official response is to Declare you are using redirect, but you do not actually specify which shield zone until you're distributing.

This is gonna make some diehard Assault Proton Torpedo Dodonna guys pretty sad.

I thought that might have been waht the original discussion was involved with, but for the life of me, I couldn't find the original conversation in search with so few parameters.

We had been running it the "choose prior to crit" way (which is what the RRG seemed to indicate to me, anyways) which made little difference EXCEPT as it applied to crits that could affect shield values such as Assault Proton Torpedoes, Assault Concussion Missiles, and Ion Cannon Batteries. Every now and then you'd get that rare super-APT crit that dropped the highest shield zone to nothing on the zone that was getting redirected to. It was brutal.

The RRG says to do it the original way. . .

So, essentially, you declare that you're spending a Redirect token at the appropriate time, but do not state to which zone you're moving damage until you actually get to resolving the damage.

I've re-read the RRG, and this e-mail does not contradict anything in it.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Initially I agreed with this assessment, but going back and re-reading the RRG, it's not really implied.

The talk about picking a hull zone doesn't have to take place before actually resolving the token.

I interpreted it the same as Lyr, but it's definitely open to interpretation. And it does make sense to do it this way.

We've always played it the way the Michael Gernes stated. April question request..... wow, 5 months for a reply? Bizarre.

Yeah this is how we've been playing it

I certainly felt it was a legitimate question... Legitimate enough that I couldn't infer a specific answer, and thus, referred it to FFG :D
