R7-T1 - a question

By Dosiere, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Had something come up in a game and just wanted to make sure we've got this correct. You pick an enemy in range 1-2, ok. If said enemy is in your firing arc, you can TL him.. Ok. Then, you may perform a boost.

The question that came up was whether you have to have the enemy in arc to boost. Can you boost as long as the enemy is in range 1-2, but not in arc? I said I understood it to apply the in arc part to both the TL and boost, but I can see why it came up. I'm actually not sure anymore. The part in the faq about the card just deals with both actions being optional.

Has this come up for any of you before?

The FAQ says this:

R7-T1:
If a ship equipped with R7-T1 is at Range 1–2 and inside the firing arc of an enemy ship, the following sequence occurs: the ship equipped with R7-T1 may acquire a target lock on the enemy ship. Then, the ship equipped with R7-T1 may perform a free boost action, even if it did not acquire a target lock on the enemy ship.
You must be in range and arc to acquire the target lock or perform the boost or both.

Sheesh, yes I see it now thanks. That's what I get for playing right after work. For some reason the extra clarification in the faq (in the first sentence no less), didn't compute.

Basically the "following sequence" can only occur if range and arc conditions are both met. There was some debate about this when it first came out and I recall an email ruling finally put it to rest. The FAQ entry followed soon after and was basically the same as the email.

Cards that have multiple effects all trigger off the requirement. Its not check requirement, do effect 1, check requirement, do effect 2. Its check requirement, do effects.

That FAQ entry is a horrible misreading of the card.

"Action: Choose an enemy ship at Range 1-2. If you are inside that ship's firing arc, you may acquire a target lock on that ship. Then, you may perform a free boost action."

It should work:

1. Choose an enemy ship.

2. If it's at R1-2, R7-T1 activated, continue to step 3. If not at R1-2, full stop.

3. If in arc, optionally acquire TL, continue to step 4. If not in arc, do not acquire TL, continue to step 4.

4. Optional boost.

But that's not how it works. You must be in range and arc to be able target lock and/or boost. I thought FFG cleared this one up long ago. I don't think the FAQ is at fault, it's the wording on the card that caused the confusion initially.

Sometimes I wish FFG would put more clarifications in the FAQ as errata...

Wouldn't this wording have been much clearer?

"R7-T1
Action: If you are at Range 1-2 of an enemy ship and in it's firing arc, you may acquire a target lock on that ship and you may perform a free boost action."

Yep, that would have left no doubts at all.

OK fine, R7-T1 is a horrible mis-wording of the FAQ. :P
