Leia meets Bossk - Merc List

By Rogue Dakotan, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I've been stuck with Rebel Force Users and Spies for a while so I wanted to try and make a Merc list for a change.

8▪ Bossk
10Elite Trandoshan Hunter
8▪ Leia Organa
3▪ Gideon Argus
7Trandoshan Hunter
1▪ Prey on the Weak

2▪ Under Duress

1▪ Temporary Alliance

2Close the Gap
2Cripple
2Parting Blow
2Grisly Contest
2Dirty Trick
1Merciless
1Primary Target
2Trandoshan Terror
0Disorient
0Wild Attack
0Stall for Time
0Opportunistic
0Urgency
0Take Initiative
0Recovery

Prey on the weak can go on either the eTrandos or on Bossk. Alternatively it could be swapped out for Head Hunter and put on Bossk.

I wanted to try and use Leia to give Bossk or the eTrandos extra shots. Gideon is there to help the trandos get into close and personal range.

Does this list have enough teeth? Will they die too fast? Not enough mobility? It's been a while since I did mercs.

I was also thinking of instead of leia, using MHD to support the eTrandos since they can die quickly.

My issue with lists like this is two fold.

You got 4 points in skirmish upgrades (that's a whole nexu or an ugnaught or 2 officers etc....)

And

You only have 5 activations, 1 support unit and 6 (7 with leia I guess) attacks each turn.

I think most competitive skrimish lists will have at least 2 support characters. Those guys that you can use for activations without using up your more powerful units. If I have 6 activations with 3 officers, and I go first, that means you have to activate Gideon and 2 other strong units, before I activate anything but officers.

Also, trandos still just die too easy. Once you lose one, you've lost a huge amount of your overall damage output.

Finally, the more I've used and played against Under Duress, the more I've seen it's just not worth it. If a trando is shooting you at short range, you're in trouble anyway. 1 extra damage rarely makes a difference. If bossk drops his indiscriminate fire and causes 2 strain on 5 figures.... I sure as hell won't be discarding my whole command deck. Hell, even without Under Duress, I wouldn't discard 10 command cards either.
All that card does is force some extra damage, and I don't think that's worth 2 points. Before, it's a legitimate choice 1 card or 1 dmg (just like zillo i guess). With Under Duress, it's not a choice anymore because 1 dmg is not worth 2 cards. I think I've seen it trigger exactly once so far.

I like the idea of Bossk and Leia together, though I haven't yet tried it. Recycling Bossk-friendly cards like Trandoshan Terror and To the Limit and having him focused through Gideon sounds terrifying. I'd be tempted by some Wing Guards, one for each named character, but I don't know what else I would fill the list with.

I think for fun, this is a very challenging list. For an ultra competitive list, it has some problems. InqZ went through some of them, inherently, the Trandos are on the fence, almost really good, but with newer deployment cards, they can really go down in a hurry (as can anything)

My biggest concern, and this is what makes trandos hard or challenging in general, is that they need/want to be close to the action, (You want to be adjacent) which can be potent for you, but is also what makes the Trandos die easy, is that the opponent always gets his shots off. Generally, Bossk wants to be in close range as well, Leia does not. So you've got some competing strategies occurring within your list that may make or break you. It would be great to get some eWing guard in there, but they struggle as a lot of the Merc deployments in that as a standalone card, they look good, but they, like most Mercs, have no synergy within a list, so they don't really benefit each other.

Wing Guards get this rule that allows them to reroll a die when adjacent to a friendly trooper, but their other rule only works on non-Guardians. The only troopers (so far,) in the Merc army are also Guardians, so you only get the benefit of one rule, but never get the 2nd benefit. But they still cost the same as a similar trooper in other factions. Trandos want to be close, but have a hard time staying alive if they are super close.

There are these little idiosyncrasies, throughout the Merc faction that makes list building with them always a challenge.

I like the regular Trandoshans, the elites are just not worth the extra points. I would drop the elites and take an extra regular unit.

When you are playing a Strain list, you actually want your opponent to discard Command Cards. But Under Duress just doesn't do that. Your opponent will rarely discard 2 Cards for 1 Strain, but take the damage instead. This is OK, but not worth 2 points. I would not take this card.

Prey on The Weak is OK, but you rather need another activation.

Regular Hired Guns are great for Terminal and Mission control. The elite Nexu is great to deal damage. Another unit of regular Trandoshans would be the best, but you don't have enough points for that.
