Would you still buy and play X-Wing if the ships came unpainted?

By SpikeSpiegel, in X-Wing

Nup. One of the great things about X-Wing is that it is ready to go out of the box. I consider myself a decent painter as far as wargames go; but I love that I don't have to do a thing to these minis and they still look fantastic.

If they were unpainted/unassembled, I would expect them to be significantly cheaper.

Good question and some interesting varying responses.

Personally, back in the 40k days I struggled with watching 2 armies of differing aesthetic quailty face off. Seeing one fella devoting hours of dedication intohis army play against a shabbily constructed and minimally painted army was disheartening. Obviously, fellas are into the hobby for different reasons. I loved the minis, the painting, the converting and modelling but had no interest in the game itself.

Having the models come pre painted removes this contrast. Both armies look great (meaning the guys/girls that just want to play .. Can!)

But for the fellas who enjoy a bit of painting/modelling, they can indulge in their hobby .. and FFG supports this.

I wouldn't.

The painted minis drew me in.

I haven't touched IA, because they aren't painted.

Pretty much this.

I wouldn't have spent so much if there was an additional cost to display my units.

No. I cannot paint, and am trying to find someone to pant the only minitures game I own.

I haven't repainted any of my ships though i always wanted to do it but i wouldn't have had a problem with unpainted ships if they would cost less.

It's weird. This game would still be as mechanically fun, but it wouldn't be as _awesome_ without painted minis.

And let's not kid ourselves: 90% of people wouldn't paint their minis. Which means that when people go into stores and see people playing, the game just looks a lot less interesting. Because of that, I think it might actually hurt sales of the game overall.

If the ships had been unpainted in the box I never would have even thought twice about it. The detail of the models would not stand out as well in the plastic bubble and that "OOO LOOK HOW COOL THIS SHIP IS" wouldn't have happened with me or my wife that decided to buy the first core set as a christmas gift for me.

I probably would never have bought into it if the models were unpainted

Now, yes.

But I wouldn't have gotten into the game originally had the models been unpainted.

+1

I am not interested in assembling miniatures, I am not interested in painting miniatures, I will not be playing any system which requires either.

No way

No. The fact that I didn't have to paint anything was a big plus.

Yeah, the main reason I got Wings of War a decade ago was because I had access to the official painted minis of a Sopwith Camel and Red Baron. Flying around with paper cards was never fun, now flying around the dining table with 4 Wave 1 WW1 planes was friggin awesome.

I bought the x wing expansion and a lambda because I had the micro machines when I was a kid and wanted them for my desk. After I looked at the cards and bought a core set I was hooked (3 years ago) however I wouldn't have bought them had they been unpainted.

No. I'm not into IA, Descent, Batman or tabletop war games that I don't already have painted forces for purely because I no longer have the time to devote to painting miniatures. X-Wing and Armada are prefect for me because I don't have to.

No.

And the fact that IA is unpainted is the very reason I have not gotten into that game.

The fact that Armada have all the small ships unpainted is the reason I do not play that game.

Would love to play Star Wars Rebellion and I would easily pay double if they were to make a premium version with painted minis.

No I would not buy this game if it was unpainted. I don't play Armada because not all of the ships are painted. FFG missed out on a lot of sales as far as I'm concerned.

Honestly, probably not...

I'm a Star Wars fan first and gamer second. I'd certainly have been very intrigued had I seen unpainted X-Wing stuff and I'm fairly sure I'd have still bought into it. One thing's for sure though, I'd be flying unpainted ships. I have neither the interest nor the skill to paint them myself.

No, I would not play X-Wing if the models would be unpainted.

I've had enough of my share of miniatures that I had to assemble and paint for TTGs. (Still have a bulk of white metal floating around.)

Thus I'd never would have bought into X-Wing, if its miniatures would have come unpainted (or even unassembled, on top of that).

Being assembled and prepainted was one of the biggest selling points of this game in my opinion.

So, long answer short:

No, I definitely wouldn't have bought into it!!!

If I were to paint them, I'd want the models to come un-assembled as well, because it's a real pain painting something that's already been assembled most of the time.

But the short answer is no.

I've painted minis before, but I just don't have the time these days, and I wouldn't play with unpainted.
