Would you still buy and play X-Wing if the ships came unpainted?

By SpikeSpiegel, in X-Wing

No. Never would have bought even one.

funny how this kind of topic keeps popping up. And it seems like its basically people wanting cheaper ships. I for one remember the days of "Star fleet battles" you had to paint your own stuff. back then I sucked as a painter and that is the problem some people just suck as painters. A crappy paint job takes away from the game as does a non painted one. So unless FFG were to make a no crappy or non painted ships allowed rule i am against it!!

I agree that the main reaso to want unpainted ships is the perceived reduced cost. However, when you compare the cost of X-Wing to the cost of unpainted games, I really don't think the cost savings would be that significant. X-Wing is already pretty inexpensive to play compared to other collectible games.

Cost isn't even a factor in this to me. The models look great and I want to buy them, getting them $5 cheaper and them looking horrible doesn't appeal to me.

Probably would not have jumped on-board so swiftly and heavily if not pre-painted...

... yet I had previously been dubious about any pre-painted mini's (despite being a massive painting procrastinator - having the skill but not the patience).

All that said, I would certainly like the idea of FFG allowing you to selectively order ships unpainted (not as a full expansion, just the ship, that way you must have bought an standard pack in order to play) - for when you really want to do a custom paint on a "clean canvas".

(but tournaments should then have a "must be painted" rule)

They'd probably also make plenty of sales to hobbyists who just want to collect and paint models.

Yeah, I'd still buy them.

I've repainted most of my Imperial ships as First Order ships. The white-on-black makes my Firespray look like a cop car, which is kind of appropriate considering it was a patrol craft. I haven't started work yet on my Rebels, still thinking of a fleet theme. The factory paint is decent, but I'm a mini-wargame painting hobbyist, so painting the ships is a draw for me.

I don't mind that they come pre-painted, its pretty handy for those that don't paint, and that means more players and a successful game.

The factory paint just makes a decent base for those like me. :)

On a side note - since I haven't had to put in the effort to paint them, I do find I am not as careful about how I handle and transport them, as I am about my own painted mini's.

No.

Would not have given them a second look. And neither would have the majority of my play group.

I am currently in the process of repainting a very large scum cartel, BECAUSE I WANT TO, but i would have never given the game a second look if the minis were not painted. If i HAD to paint them, i would not have been interested.

Also, this game is already cheap for a mini game. The cost saving of losing the paint on the models, would not be justified.

Also, FFG has grabbed many players by simply managing to get them interested in a single painted model they saw on a shelf. nothing to do with the game. Simply the painted model.

I know there are countless players out there that had no intention in getting into the game, but because of that one purchase of a beautiful model, they are now into the game for a lot of $$$$, and continue to purchase wave after wave.

If FFG stopped offering pre-painted x-wing minis, or even started offering unpainted minis separate, it would be probably the worst business decision the company could ever make.

I love painting X-Wing miniatures! I used to be scared of miniature painting, but when I bought Imperial Assault, I had to work through that fear.

Still, though, I'd feel massively ripped off if an unpainted miniature and about 5-10 playing cards cost $15. But that is how a lot of other miniatures games work...

I guess to summarize, I like having 'em painted. You can always paint over the factory colors, but you don't have to spend days or weeks painting every time a new wave comes out. Plus FFG's factory paint jobs are actually really good.

Nope

If they came unpainted...

A) A large percentage of people probably wouldn't paint them, and facing an unpainted fleet wouldn't be as fun.

B) Less people would've gotten into the game, and the large community is one of the major draws of X-Wing.

I play X-Wing because I can't paint. In short: no. In long: NoooooOO.

I paint most of my ships now, but I started playing because they were painted and it was star wars and an easy to enter price point. Probably would not have jumped into it if I had to paint it. Coming out of GW half my minis were always in a mid state of paint and I was just done with that.

At MSRP -No

Eh, I don't even know how to Answer.....

... I paint X-Wing Ships almost every day.... But I've never played....

Nope.

You should really try a game or two. The pre painted miniatures are really nice right out of the box and really mske the game more fun right away. :-)

Also, no I would not have gotten into this game anywhere near as far as I have if I had to paint things.

Yes.

I'd have less play time though :/

I already played an unpainted, unassembled minis game...WH40K.

X-Wing is ready to go and you can customize only if you really want to.

So my answer is no. It is one of the reasons I stay away from Imperial Assault.

I would be disinclined to acquiesce to their request for monetary compensation for the aforementioned models in the absence of the proper application of pigmentation.

Means 'No.'

I play Armada.

As much as I like to tell myself that I would've played this game anyways, I know deep down that I never would've picked this game up if it wasn't for the fact the models were already painted and the game was ready to go right out of the box.

Totally on the fence about whether I would have started this game if the minis where unpainted. Probably yes.

Do I like that that they are painted. . .absofrikinlutely.

Yes, but I would buy far less.

I wouldn't.

The painted minis drew me in.

I haven't touched IA, because they aren't painted.
