no touching!

Player 1 reveals a one bank on his slaver dial

Player 2 without asking touches and nudges Player 1's ship base toward the asteroid before he can even put the template down (you have to watch closely).

Player 1 nudges it back into place (with Player 2's hands still on it!)

They have a T.O. step in to place the ship.

Am I right to assume you NEVER touch another players stuff without permission or is it ok here?

Man, Player 2 is lucky Player 1 didn't force him into a hockey game. You can't be poutine your hands on another man's property. That's not what the game's aboot.

You're right you shouldn't touch other people stuff with out asking but I didn't see anything overly bad in that video. BotD the other player was trying to help.

I agree about touching your opponent's ships, templates, dice, etc., but in this video I see nothing that I would consider malicious or cheating. And as far as the asteroid goes, anyone can see it was never going to be a factor. He was way clear.

Yes, you are. That's what buggers me most about Tractor beams, since I dislike other people touching my minis (I take a really good care of it, some would say nearly obsessionally ^^) : the opponent has to do the BR/boost, and thus touch my stuff, even if I don't want them to.

..that ship land on that asteroid in a tournament game.

If I need help I will ask for it.

Yer he shouldn't have touched it before asked for help but he didn't hit the asteroid so there's no harm done

Burn the witch?

Be careful posting this stuff, its a game. it sounds like it was handled at the time let it go.

Who is raised to think it's okay to touch someone else's things without asking?

I disagree about the asteroid not being an issue. Why call in the T.O. to place it for them?

The text indicates " The opposing player selects the direction of the barrel roll and the final position of the ship."

This does not give your opponent the right to paw over your stuff. I have used Tractor Beam and simply told my opponent how and where to move their ship. I make sure they keep templates in place until I am satisfied with the position.

If an opponent offered to let me move their ship, I would do it, but I am OK with directing you how to do it and not actually handling your ship.

True. I really think it demonstrates why NOT to touch other people's ships during a National tournament. Winner gets a seat at the Worlds. It's a premier event and I doubt many just act like it's just a game. Am I wrong?

I have definitely been in situations where we agreed to just move each others ships when they were closer to us, but that was in casual events.

wow. sure looks like he was trying to hold things in place for an intricate situation when he accidentally moved the ship a millimeter. Then his opponent moved it back while he nodded his head, as though he was saying "yeah, it slipped a bit; sorey, eh?"

where's my pitchfork.

Presumably both of these players have been stripped of their final standings, prizes, and are on the FFG Ban List now for their audacity to play the game using their hands and physical miniatures as opposed to Vassal.

Communists, amirite?

So cool to see more Canadian X-Wing content!

I don't know about the issue, but it's awesome to see more of us Northern players online.

So is that the real source of this problem?

Those Canadians a bunch of touchey-feely types?

When i tractor someone I get them to BR/Boost where I want. Only ever touch other peoples stuff when it's at my end and they ask me to.

I'm too clumsy not to break stuff otherwise.

I used lube, and yelled surprise he's got no grounds to complain.

Who is raised to think it's okay to touch someone else's things without asking?

Anyone who raised in an environment which has no inequality, stealing and a high-spirit of sharing?!?

In some cultures this goes even beyond things, they touch even themselves without formally asking first. ;-)

Anyway, at least in the local community it seems standard that you push down bases or templates without much of a thought, but ask before you move anything, for example marking ships to clear space. And honestly, I think that touching the stuff of the other player creates the kind of cooperation which makes bonds between players much better and enhances the community as a whole. It is encourage by the mechanics and might the #1 reason why the community is so friendly to each other. Sharing templates, dice, etc is another part in it for sure.

Ultimately, consent is and should be given, verbally or otherwise.

At my FLGS, strangers and I share dice, cards, tokens, and even ships almost every time I'm there. When people are expected to bump, assistance is given by holding down ship bases. When maneuvers are performed at the opponent's side of the table, they're almost always executed by the opponent to prevent the first player from having to lean over the entire game.

But none of that happens at my FLGS without the players' consent, whether it's given verbally or through a gesture such as a nod.

Visible consent in the form of body language is still given in cultures that greet that way; shaking hands is customary in all of the United States, after all. These greetings still have a 'call and response' format where a person who initiated the gesture can visibly see the intended recipient's attitude and willingness to continue. A cold shoulder shuts down the open arms of a hug, or an outstretched hand can be ignored.

Thus I wrote "formally asking" … ;-)
