Tell me about your Lightsaber

By The Grand Falloon, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Mostly I'm curious what more experienced glowstick users have settled on. What Lightsaber style do you use? What kind of crystal do you have in there, and why? How did you get it? Did you choose to hunt down a specific type of crystal, or did your GM just hand out a sack of Ilum crystals? I reckon I have about one more session before I should let my players take a crack at getting their own lightsabers, so I'm kinda curious what's come before.

From a campaign ran by a friend of mine (not my character, either, but Perry much the most awesome lightsaber I've seen! ) This character's lightsaber is pretty darn unique. The hilt used to be an ancient sword, but after it was broken in battle again someone possessed by and working with the Dark spirit of what was effectively a Sith Lord, my character rebuilt the hilt into a lightsaber hilt.

The crystal is unique - it's one of only three such crystals in existence, and it glows a blazing white, and has a special ability that lets you use the Suppress power in conjunction with your attacks, although only if the target is a Dark Side Force user. Attacking Light side Force users and non-Sensitives with it actually imposes a bunch of setbacks and upgrades, and inflicting a crit on such targets actually damages the lightsaber as though it has been affected by sunder. The crystal had been worked into the blade when the 'saber was an ancient sword, and it took a bunch of quick thinking to retro-fit the hilt as a lightsaber when the blade broke. But it was an awesome scene :D !

The character is pretty cool, too. He started out as a Colonist: Doctor, but when he realized he was called to the Force he branched into Shadow and then, due to the events of the scene in which he built his lightsaber, the GM allowed a re-build as a Guardian: Protector/Soresu Defender. He's still pretty new to the whole Force thing, but he's got heart, and Faith, and that's what really matters in the adventures he goes on, anyway :) .*

Waiting to see who gets it...

Despite the system wanting to push it to the forefront, my last FaD group really didn't get all that into the lightsaber thing. Sure, three of the five of them did use the things, but none of them personalized them to the degree that Edge characters did with their armor and blasters. All three just went for Ilum crystals and grabbed a few Mods here and there--nothing terribly interesting.

Strangely enough , as much as I love the description above, it would appear that dark side spirits exist only as a manifestation of the dark side of the force, the devs have been quoted as saying that in cannon only the light side had a path to immortality, ala force ghosts dark side spirits were not manifestations of a previous dark side users spirit but current manifestations of the dark side of the force as the force user perceives it, and not long gone spirits of dark side force users.

The Clone Wars and less so, Rebels appear to bear this out. Max Brooks was quoted as saying all the dark side leads to is self perpetuation of hate rather than longevity.

When Attack of The Clones came out, my parents phoned up one Staurday morning and asked what we were doing that morning. Long story short they took me and my two sons to ToysRUs and got my eldest a purple one and my youngest a green one... then one of them said 'We don't have a Sith Lord to fight.' So, my parents also bought me Vader's red lightsaber!!! AWESOME...

Not in game info but those plastic lightsabers are still going strong, the silver paint has come off, which looks better because they now look like 'Used Star Wars Tech' and the plastic saber bit is 'bruised' to hell and back.. I doubt the new ones available now will last as long ;)

I'm gonna keep going with SWTOR's interpretation, personally, where Sith ghosts are basically bound to the area where they died.

Excepting Valkorion/Vitiate, of course, but he's not so much a ghost as an avatar of the Dark Side, as far as I can tell.

Well, my character found his lightsaber at our first session. Because before that session he had lost it into that cave full of wolf-like creatures. So he had to fight the alpha wolf in order to get to the lightsaber, while his friends held off the betas. He actually lost the saber while he was exploring the cave. He dropped it as he escaped the angry pack.

He got it back by accidentally calling upon it with Force and pulling it to his hand, after his blaster pistol had malfuctioned and the wolf felt unstoppable. With the saber, he easily killed it with few strikes. It's a basic saber, has basic crystal in it and it's blade is of blue colour.

I'm still in the process of converting my signature character Korath from D6/D20, His original lightsaber from those systems was a tri-phase lightsaber with three Mephite Crystals which he collected from caves on Ossus. For this version, I've set his lightsaber up as such:

Basic Lightsaber

• Superior hilt personalization(+1 damage, lock on switch, Automatic Advantage per use)

• Extended Hilt (+1 Damage, +1 Vicious)

• Dual Phase

• Cyclic Crystal Array (fits three crystals)

• Mephite (+11 Damage, Crit Rating 1) total Damage=+13

• Kimber Stone (+11 Damage, Stun Damage, Concussion +1, Disorient +1) Total damage = +13 Stun

The third crystal has yet to be determined.

I've a couple different PCs that use a lightsaber.

My current one, an ex-street rat named Valin (Sentinel/Shien Expert) played in a TFA-era game (occurs shortly after the events of the film in a backwater system of the galaxy) currently only has a training lightsaber, albeit one that he built himself under the instruction of Master Skywalker during his time as part of Luke's new generation of Jedi before it was betrayed by Kylo Ren. Only used the 'saber once in game play, to defeat a bounty hunter by thwacking the guy's jetpack to send him careening off (thank you Triumph!), but the rest of the party was so preoccupied they still don't know Valin's got a beatstick, and chalk his victory of the bounty hunter as sheer dumb luck. Hoping that since our PCs have crossed the 100 earned XP mark that there's a lightsaber crystal in Valin's near future, but not sure what type it would be. Maybe Endless Vigil will have some neat offerings.

In the AoR game I play in (currently on hold while GM tries to come up with new adventures), I play Kyren (Warrior/Shii-Cho Knight/Niman Disciple), who uses an Ilum crystal (not from Ilum, but as that seems to be the system's "generic kyber crystal," that's what I went with) in his lightsaber (PC had enough XP to count as Knight Level, so he got a free 'saber). Right now it's got superior hilt customization (hooray Contribution Rank Rewards!), a customized grip (no setback, Accurate 1) and a two-piece hilt attachment (from v2.0 of Ways of the Force), modded for +2 damage, -1 crit, and +1 Vicious (got a lucky roll on the second damage increase). And he's pretty much a straight-up beatstick that's laid waste to pretty much anything that gets in front of him when the lightsaber's out.

In a Dawn of Defiance game that's pretty much gone defunct, I was playing a Seeker/Ataru Striker/Force Emergent who went off on a solo quest to Dantooine to find a replacement crystal for the flawed one he'd started play with, earning a Dantari crystal and the enmity of an agent of the Emperor (not sure she was a Hand, but a safe guess). Didn't get to use it a whole lot with Hawk Bat Swoop before the campaign fizzled out, but the crystal's special effect was a boon for my Strain-starved combat monkey.

We had some nice interesting saber mods in our campaign. Out of the 6 PCs, 5 of us had lightsabers, 3 of us had Dantari crystals (I believe there was an awesome adventure I missed), a standard Ilum crystal in a double-bladed lightsaber and one other crystal I'm not 100% sure on (we got it from a Jedi Temple Guard saberpike).

The most interesting one out of all of us used all the HP on one of her two blasters to mod the grip into a lightsaber. I think for stat purposes it functioned as a shoto hilt to prevent it being too overpowered. Don't think of Ezra's saber -that's clearly a saber modded to fire stun bolts. This was a gun that got the grip replaced with a saber hilt.

We also had the fun rule that whilst my character's saber didn't count as having the Extended Hilt mod, it functioned as if it did if anyone else used it because it was made for big Wookiee hands.

I meant to also answer the question my lightsaber isn't technically a lightsaber, but is as close as you can get, it is a Morgukai Cortosis Staff. With 0 hard points it comes as non customizable.

Which one? My Clone Wars Artisan is always coming up with new ones, with training emitters if nothing else is available.

I've got a pair of Twinned Shotos, a Curved Hilt Pike (saberscythe), an extended hilt with damage boosts, a Shadowsheath+stealthed internals concealed one, and a few training emitters with explosive biolocks...

Not got to play my Sentinel yet so this is more what I want.

I want a double bladed silver saber with a handle looking made from some sort of bone/ivory/white tree. It will be customised and carved by said character. Dunno what crystal, we will see what is out by the time I can start towards one.

One of my players has three now. He had one which had superior, and was a cursed item, tainted by the dark side. He had to pass a discipline check whenever he went into combat, and once he failed it became too hard to say no to and would use it even if there were better options at the time.

He aced a check to free himself after going on a personal growth type mission. Got rid of it, and came across a choice of crystals. One was a broken item, one was an Ilum, and the other was a Krayt pearl. I let him hear the descriptions of how they looked and had him pick. Picked the pearl. He fashioned a forced hilt from a defeated ancient droid, and the lens is so green, that it's stereotypically venom green. Like xenomorph blood.

His other is an orange short blade. Basic. He just found a Jedi master looking to reform the order, and he impressed her with ferociousness and heroism, and she asked him to join the new order, and awarded him with a new blade from one of her fallen knights. I called it the whitesaber due to the blade and silver grip, but I'm not 100% on the stats.

All the lightsabers my characters have are basic ones—though Aanu's has currently been dubbed the "novasaber" due to some threat on putting it back together making it way too bright. Not that Aanu really knows how to use it anyway...

the "novasaber"

S'a good name. Who came up with that?

A PC/villain of mine (started out as a PC then was the villain of a later campaign I ran) named Spaga has a curved/extended hilt lightsaber with the casing being a hollowed out rib bone.

The rib bone for a while was used as a flute and was taken from his first kill: a rakghoul.

The crystal was a basic red illum crystal without any mods.

I created a pair of curved, long handled lightsabers for an adventure once, though they were probably a mistake :/ . One of my players stripped one of them from a Sorosuub Constable who was selling "Jedi" artifacts to the local Moff. It resembled half of a bent Champion styled hilt, except that the top held an angular "Claw" of sorts that focused the blade emitting (holding a peculiar Barab Ingot inside the casing) from an intense fiery one to a focused style.

The color was sickly pale green with a smoky grey center. Instead if granting Burn 1 it offered Pierce 1. However, once it was damaged 2 steps the inhibitor claw was broken, taking away Pierce and instead adding 1 damage, reducing the Crit to 2, and gaining Burn 2 making the saber highly unstable and fiery.

Also, the user of this lightsaber had to lose 1 strain per turn and make a Hard Resilience check or take 1 wound. However, the character began to embrace the pain of the blade, allowing them 2 free black force pips while increasing their Conflict gain, narratively tapping into his pain. The saber was also always one step damaged and they automatically inflicted the wound.

After awhile, the player caught up to the second, making them gain four black force pips while also damaging them 2 wound and 2 strain per turn. Not only that, but every three turns they would either receive an Agonizing or Fearsome wound.

He eventually abandoned them, throwing them into the Naboo depths and attempting to return to the light. They still don't know if the Ingots were truly dark side aligned, or just unstable. Nevertheless, he still remained in constant pain narratively.

There's NO WAY I would put anything from a rakghoul in or near my mouth.

Please don't take this wrong, but I might say I hate this. It always made more sense to me to have Dark Side Spirits be more the norm, as they are so individualistic, and fear being forgotten, after their meteoric rise to power, while the Jedi are without feelings, or hubris, by comparison, and they wouldn't see fading into non-existence, and becoming one with the living Force bad. In fact, when Obi-Wan did it, it sort of was a bad thing; he was resisting the path of the Jedi, and placing himself before peace, but in order to prepare the last Jedi for his trial. Later, he even has to tell Luke that he won't be able to do this, anymore, and they say good-bye, in a dream. Yes, I know that this is EU, which they torched, but it made so much more sense. The Sith need to rule everything, even life, death, and time, makes them spirits, sometimes, while the Jedi are just here for the moment, and prepared to live as they are supposed to, die as they are supposed to, and become one with the Force. This is why Yoda tells Anakin not to fear death, because it's normal, while beings like Exar Kun, and Palpatine, clung to existence, as shadows, in order to try and continue their evil plans.

Okay, I'm done there; like I said, someone will "well, that's EU, so it doesn't count", or something. My old, whiny fan self is just talking.

As for lightsabers, I have one that is rather fleshed out, and a set that is, story-wise, but not mechanically. The one with actual stuff has a Dantari crystal. Said kid is being trained by a Rom Kota-analogue, a somewhat burned out, has-been of a Jedi, and once the training started, they went to Dantooine, because there was an Imperial presence, but not a huge one, it's strong in the Force, and said crystals. Tricky part was trying to weigh getting the crystal against killing the kinrath, who were in the way.

For the more vague ones, my first one, back when Edge was new, was a kid who survived Order 66, and lost his lightsaber, as well as his master. She had it when she, and several other Jedi, were curb-stomped by General Grievous, and a Puan collected them after Kenobi finished off the monster. For a few years, they moved around, until a crime lord bought the set of seven sabers for his private collection. Had to sneak in to steal them back. Gets silly. Keeps his, and his master's, for someone "special", and hides the other five; if I said where, I'd get booed, so please accept that it's silly.

I really like that lightsabers are so customizable, but seem to rarely find good opportunities to do so. The crystals are rare, as opposed to many parts you buy for other stuff, and even some that aren't that great in cool are in places no one is likely to find one. Then again, I suppose that's just up to the GM to make what should be findable available, yes? Maybe someday, I'll have a character with a Krayt Dragon pearl, a Hurrikan jewel, or something else "awesome", but I really do like Dantari, so I'm happy, for the moment. ;)

Okay, seriously, how has no one called me out on the one I posted yet? I thought I made it glaringly obvious.

But we've got an entire page here, so I guess I didn't...I was expecting to be getting ribbed after two or three posts, max :D !

Dresden Files. I was too busy shaking my head.

There we go! Thank you, it was driving me nuts that no one had said it yet!

...of course, that's pretty much my fault, but still. :)

The game I'm in is basically taking place in a new Jedi academy based on Belsavis somewhere around 30 or so years after the destruction of the second Death Star (not in Force Awakens timeline, the game started before that came out, and it would have been a pain to retcon). The basic premise was "Jedi Harry Potter." Us players are all initiates, though very close to becoming Padawans (and very clearly prodigies given that we're up to nearly 1000 earned xp at this point over the course of a year and a half or so of playing). A few notable things we've done are reassembled a Sith Holocron from shards scattered over Belsavis (which included things like discovering and befriended an ancient snake species down in the deep depths of the planet that used both the 'hot and cold' sides of the Force, working with Ithorian herdships to investigate disturbances, dealing with the Sith Lord in the Holocron that was possessing one of our players for a while, investigating ancient ruins and tombs, and more), stopping some pirates and slave traders (in separate instances), managed to recovered the Jedi Temple on Coruscant's archives and Holocron vault for the Jedi (that had been trapped to all hell and back), fought several Sith and one Inquisitor (not necessarily at the same time), and more.

And we're all still only using training sabers. We're close to building our sabers, but we don't know how that'll go down yet or what crystals we might have access to. But in all honesty, the training sabers have been more than sufficient for what we have encountered so far. Which does mean that our GM does an excellent job of appropriate balancing the combats while keeping them tense. No one has died, but there have been plenty of close calls and tough fights.

My character in particular is a Mirialan Soresu Defender, expanding into Protector, then Sage, and finally Scholar. Definitely skilled in lightsaber combat, but also definitely a loremaster. Among the party we have a few people with multiple styles (Niman as secondary), and a decent spread of styles overall though Shii-Cho is unrepresented by the players.
