At this point it's inevitable we will be getting the Quasar. Ideally it would be neutral and usable by both sides but for the moment, and for the sake of my idea, let's just say it'll be Imperial and the Rebels will get their own version (but with the same concept as below).
Carriers need to be unique. What if a carrier gave you a few free squadrons that don't count towards the fleet cost? Carriers have four slots/hangers and each squadron costs a certain amount of slots. So you can mix and match what you bring into a match as long as counts up to four slots. Ideally the total cost of filling the slot cost would still be less, even with the more expensive squadrons, then the total cost of the carrier
Imperials
Tie Fighters--One slot each
Tie Interceptors--One slot each
Tie Bombers--Two slots each
Tie Advanced--Two slots each
Rebels
X-Wings--Two slots each
A-Wing--One slot each
Y-Wing--Two slots each
B-Wing--Two slots each
So for example an imperial carrier can bring four free tie fighter squadrons into a match OR two tie fighters and two tie interceptors OR a tie fighter, a tie interceptor, and tie bomber.
1: Carriers themselves are very fragile, need escorts. Adequate against enemy squadrons but almost glass against most capital ships, although a little better then flotillas.
2: Carriers can only deploy one squadron per round but that squadron can immediately move or attack. If the carrier is destroyed all squadrons still on board are destroyed as well.
3: Carriers have high squadron command.
3: Carriers can only carry standard fighters (No heroes or rogues or villains or large ships such as the decimator, imperial shuttle, Ghost, and etc...)
It's not a perfect idea yet but I think this would be an interesting way of spicing up fleets. There would need to obviously be restrictions that balance out what is obviously a big advantage. I think this would also help introduce more squadrons into battles as fighters are a key if not crucial aspect of Star Wars battles in every movie.
