What makes me sad about the Scyck is how much is right with it

By Admiral Deathrain, in X-Wing

Ultimately:

  • FFG do not, as a rule, 'FAQ' existing cards - certainly not to change points costs.
  • The Scyk isn't 'bad' so much as 'over-costed'.
  • The 'Fix' will invariably come in the form of an additional rules card
  • Since the Scyk already has a title (and it's arguably the Heavy Scyk most in need of help), the fix cannot be a title
  • The Scyk has no slots on its upgrade bar - aside from the ones granted by the title - to attach said card to, and losing the cannon slot to an 'auto-choice' would drastically reduce the ship's flexibility.
  • Therefore the 'fix' needs to come in the form of a modification card.
  • The easy modification card is a cut price or free hull upgrade (as the fragility is something people complain about), but +1 hull is a 'hull upgrade', and integrated astromech exists, and FFG seem to dislike duplicating card effects.
  • If you can't increase durability by increasing hull value, or by adding a shield token, or by discarding a damage card, or by adding an agility, what's left? If it's going to be free (or nearly free) it can't be very powerful. Maybe a one-use discard to add an evade result to a defence roll?

The best fix is the FAQ point reduction on the title. I know it's messy but really the other options aren't simple and easy either. It would be a first although I'm sure I've heard Alex say he doesn't like that idea.

Imho better is to do a print run of just fixed titles and hand them out like candy, tournament kits, scum ace pack, new print runs of most wanted, etc. Though that is more expensive for FFG and in a few examples not very convenient for them either. (Printers print in fixed sizes, no space to add cards most likely, so you need to manually add those extra cards …

… thinking about it: Just print out as many fixed titles as M3A printed and use the distribution network. The retailers will be happy happy to hand them out like candy to get people into their stores. Problem solved, because that is really cheap too, just one print run for cards and account will be happy as it can be booked unter game promotion as well. You might bundle it with "one free card with each expansion bought" or similar promo stuff.

I still maintain that if you edit the Heavy Scyk title card's cost to be '-2' instead of '2' you wouldn't need another fix.

20pt TVP with Mangler cannon and Mindlink. Yep, sounds very nice.

yeah... Maybe too nice?

Nah not too nice, not in a game where the Soontir costs only 35pts, where you can fully load 3 JM5K in a 100pt list or where crackshot ties are 15pts a pop.

I agree it would make Scyks very attractive, but I honestly believe such an amendment would not push them into the realms of OP.

...

A wee points reduction...

A 4pt swing on current costing is a "wee reduction"?

You and I have a different perspective on that quaint Scottish word :D

Ha, I use that word all the time to define all sorts of things of small(ish) magnitude.

Plus I am Scottish so my posts should be read in the voice of the dad in 'So I married an axe murderer'.

I wanted to like these ships I really did but every time I fly them they die in one shot, I agree with the 2 cost becoming -2 they would still be glass cannons but might claw their points back before popping.

Thats what makes the Mindlink version so fun, as long as there is another ship to get the focus you can just evade. That is such a huge difference on the first engagement its just lovely. Of course they still die pretty quickly, but the ability to generate what is essentialy a shield with no downside at all every turn you are being shot at is pretty significant.

And on the turns you don't get shot at...well TL+Focus HLC remains hilarious as always. Like I said, beautiful ship that has so much going for it that its too bad it can't generate enough reliability to be usefull.

The eventually fix for the Scyk will be not a title, but a modify slot. We don't need a title competition, we need something that will boost our title.

Some of us also want them to be viable without the title

Yeah, I read about green turns, PTL carriers etc....no. No, that's sound stupid.

We do not want another interceptor, another protectorate. We do not want a copy of other ships. We want a unique ship.

I personally do not want another Tie fighter, or Protectorate, or Interceptor. Scycks are cool because of title, into a little cheap ship. That's the way FFG has to go.

Actually, I will love any completely new ability for those little guys ;) If I want any Interceptor-Style I have the protectorate (which I love the work that ffg done with those), or I play Imperial.

If I play scum, I want scum things.

A modification/title card that allowed for a second like the new Smugglers Compartment that provides Autothrusters for free is all that it needs IMHO.

Title: Modified Scyk, 0 pts

You may equip a second modification to this ship that costs 3 or fewer squad points. You may have two of the same modification and you may equip Autothrusters without the Boost action on you action bar.

So it's a cross between RGP and Snuggling Compartment. It also screws the Scyk out of secondary weapons, unless you also introduce a modification Scyk-only secondary weapon.

The TIE Defender has multiple titles, there's no reason this one can't.

A point reduction oncthe title does nothing for anyone who wants to run them WITHOUT the title

Less autothrusters is what this game needs imho. But FFG is taking this direction anyway (see new T70+Vectored Thrusters instead of AT).

I hope they will continue in this way.

Anyway, a second title can be fine, but we also need to boost heavy scyck title. I hope both.

What about...

"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor Mk. II (2 pts.)

Title

[Dual Card]

Side A

Your upgrade bar gains the Cannon upgrade icon. When you make an attack with a Cannon secondary weapon, you may change one Focus result to a Hit result. {Or some other dice mod.}

Side B

Your upgrade bar gains the Torpedo or Missile upgrade icon. When you equip this card, place 1 ordnance token on each equipped Torpedoes/Missiles Upgrade card. When you are instructed to discard an Upgrade card, you may discard 1 ordnance token on that card instead.

"Light Scyk" Interceptor (0 pts.)

Title

Once per round, when defending, you may change 1 Focus result to an Evade result.

It makes the point investment on the Heavy worthwhile while adding some durability to the non-Heavy.

Thoughts?
