Hello! Sorry if this has been questioned before but cannot find anything about it. One of my players wants to take Precise Aim and True Aim with the idea of using them in the group's vehicle. Is this possible? Reading both talents seems to me that Precise Aim is limited to characters (mentions ranged and melee defense) but True Aim doesn't specify anything like that so probably it's usable in a vehicle. Is there any official answer on this? Opinions?
Precise Aim / True Aim in vehicles?
Away from book at the moment, but I'm sure True Aim is a modification upgrade of a vehicle targetting array, so is definitely usable in a vehicle.
Yep, you can True Aim in vehicles, but not Precise Aim.
Yep, you can True Aim in vehicles, but not Precise Aim.
Is that your conjecture, based on the wording in the description? Or, has there been a clarification I'm not aware of?
My conjecture which is based on the wording.
True Aim states it can be used to affect "the next combat check" and firing a vehicle weapon is considered a combat check.
Precise Aim specifically reduces "Melee and Ranged Defence" neither of which a vehicle has.
I guess going by that Precise Aim could be used when targeting an individual with vehicle mounted weapons, but it has no effect on Vehicle targets.
True Aim is found in the AoR Ace:Gunner specialization, and there are plenty of talents there that are clearly applicable only to vehicle and starship weapons. So, True Aim has to be usable with vehicle and starship weapons, otherwise it wouldn’t be in that spec.
Also note that the Advanced Targeting Array is a mod for 1 HP in vehicles and starships, and one of the mods for this item is that it can provide ranks of the True Aim talent. So, again, True Aim has to be useable with vehicle and starship weapons.

While True Aim is possible with Gunnery be careful with your logic getting there. Sniper shot is a bonus available on a starship weapon modification (iirc the advanced targeting array) which allows you to increase the range of starship lasers beyond close range, but the talent itself has been confirmed as not working with starship scale weapons, only the mod itself gives you one rank of it for use with that weapon only. If you had the talent it would neither is stack nor work with other starship range weapons. The justification was that the distances involved on planetary scale were just too long for the talent to have any effect, the advanced targeting array works because it is computer aided aiming that provides a similar effect to a starship weapon.

I think it's fair to say that Precise Aim definitely won't work
against
vehicles or starships due to Richardbuxton's reasoning. It will work if you're firing a vehicle/starship
against
something that has ranged defense (like a person) but since vehicles and starships don't have a ranged defense, they only have shields, you can't use that talent regardless of whether you're firing a vehicle weapon or a personal weapon. It's not what you're firing that matters, it's your target that matters.
True Aim might work with a vehicle weapon, since it is available to use as a modification to a vehicle attachment, but we don't have confirmation about that. Since Sniper Shot was given confirmation as not normally being available to use on the planetary scale maybe True Aim requires a similar confirmation.
I'll point out that both Deadly Accuracy and Targeted Blow specifically state that they only work with "non-starship/vehicle weapons". Presumably because you could stack them together and a guy with Agility 6 and Gunnery 6 could be doing 17 damage plus successes per hit with a light laser cannon which is EXTREMELY overpowered. But with both of those talents specifying that they can't be used with starship/vehicle weapons, they may be the proverbial exceptions that prove the rule and it's logical to assume that if a talent doesn't explicitly state that it can't be used when firing a vehicle or starship weapon, then it can.
While sniper shot logical doesn't apply, in my opinion True Aim should work in the same situations that you can Aim.
Note that Sniper Shot talks about a “non-thrown ranged attack”, which strongly implies that it is generally applicable only to personal-scale weapons. There might be attachments or modifications for vehicle or ship-scale weapons that allow the same talent to apply, but those would be the exception and not the rule.
Also take a look at the specializations where Sniper Shot shows up as a talent — none of them are related to vehicle-scale weapons.

"Definitely" is a strong word for a conjecture that is based on one indirect evidential fact. I'd call it "most probably" or "very convincingly".

Thrown vehicle ranged attacks sound like fun. The explosive spears from mad max?
If I flip em the international sign of friendship as a I fly by is that a Brawl attack?....

I'm thinking vehicle-mounted catapults flinging those blue Gungan energy balls.
After Episode I that doesn't seem so far-fetched.
Double post, work WiFi sucks.

Charm. Definitly Charm. If you show your appreciation of lunar phenomenon as well you might use Astrogation.
