"You" and "your"

If my memory serves, these words used in card text always refer to the ship that has the card equipped and not the player.

Is this correct?

Absolutely correct. The words "you" and "your" never refer to the player, always to the ship.

As EdgeOfDreams states, Card Abilities on page 8 covers this as well as the section on page 2:

CARD INTERPRETATIONS
Many Ship card abilities use the word “you” to refer to the corresponding ship. Upgrade and Damage cards that use the word “you” refer to the ship to which the card is assigned.

Ok so could I then still use say palpatine to modify the attack from snap shot as snap shot says "you cannot modify" as in the ship that is firing, and palpatine says "you may change" as in the ship with palpatine.

So since the ship with snapshot isnt doing the modification then its valid. yes?

Look up the ruling for Palp and Omega Leader. Same thing here.

(That means "yes".)

You can also user r9m8 to affect snap shots from friends if I'm not misremembering that card.

Assuming you mean M9-G8, I doubt it. "... The attacker must reroll that die."

If “Omega Leader” has an enemy ship locked, [...] that ship cannot resolve abilities that cause “Omega Leader” to reroll his dice (such as R7 Astromech or Elusiveness), as these are abilities that modify dice.

Nothing to see here, I was sorely mistaken.

Omega Leader precedent indicates that what we care about is the ship that's resolving the ability (i.e. the ship that has the ability or card that would cause the modification), not who is actually going to handle the dice.

The problem with your logic is that "the ship that's resolving the ability" is not necessarily "the ship that has the ability or card that would cause the modification".

If we consider the wording on Palpatine and M9-G8 (quoted below), it is clear that

  • for Emperor Palpatine , the ship modifying the die is the ship equipped with Palpatine (you refers to the ship equipped with the card)
  • for M9-G8 , the ship modifying the die is the attacker (ie: the ship with Snap Shot, which OL has target locked)
If M9-G8 had been worded like Palpatine ("When a ship you have locked is attacking, you may reroll 1 attack die."), then it could be used against Omega Leader.

<EDIT>

If the way you're interpreting it were true, you could use Howlrunner to allow a ship OL has locked to reroll dice against Omega Leader - and we all know that doesn't work.

</EDIT>

That being said, if you have a TL on Omega Leader, you can use M9-G8 to force OL to reroll an attack die, even if OL is attacking you - since you are not modifying the dice, OL is.

Emperor Palpatine

Once per round, you may change a friendly ship's die result to any other die result. That die result cannot be modified again.

M9-G8

When a ship you have locked is attacking, you may choose 1 attack die. The attacker must reroll that die.

The faq he quoted literally discusses the argument you're making as incorrect. M9g8 is worded like r7.

Howlrunner gives a ship the ability to reroll any 1 of it's own dice. R7 or m9g8 pick some number of dice on the target and force them to be rerolled. Because of this the ship with the astromech is doing the modifying (pick a specific die and reroll it) unlike when a ship is granted the ability to choose and reroll their own die.

I was misinterpreting what he meant by the "Omega Leader precedent".

My bad!

The Omega Leader precedent was established during the battle of Tel Amon II. The precedent decrees that all shall bow down before that which is the Omega Lock Down Leader. There is none higher!
