Event cards & Action dice queries from a newbie

By jscottbowman, in War of the Ring

Hi Guys,

I own this game and love the idea of the game, being a huge Tolkien fan, but I am not a regular boardgame player (more a miniatures wargamer) and having only played the game a couple of time widely apart in time, and not to conclusion, I am still struggling to get to grips with it, and the complexity of the rules and all the cards...

Couple of questions - Event cards - can event cards overule the normal rules restrictions?

I ask as being the good player in the recent game, I found that I had a great many event cards in the early part of the game I simply could not play - lots of cards that would give me reinforcements, but since my nations were not at war I was unable to use them. Is this correct or does the power of the event card override the normal rules and allow reinforcements, even though nations not at war?

I found it very frustrating to be drawing cards each turn I could not use and having to dump them as I exceeded six cards in my hand...

second question:

Moving armies - just to clarify, a swords icon on the dice allows an army with an attached leader to move and/or attack

a plain banner icon on dice allows armies without leaders to move and/or attack.

My mate thought you could move and attack with an army with a leader, by using a army banner icon on dice aswell. Is this right or wrong?

Thanks for any help

Regards

Scott

"But when using Event Cards whose effects allow you to recruit units, a player may
recruit units for Nations that are not yet “At War,” unless the Action Card
explicitly disallows this." (p. 12)

A single army can only be activated once per Action Die. So Army result can move 2 different Armies or attack with 1. Character result lets you move an Army with Leader or attack with such an Army. To move and attack with an Army will require 2 Action dice.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply,

So I can recruit armies even though not "at war" - yippee :-)

2nd question, sorry my bad in typing 2nd part of question - but you have effectively confirmed that an army including a leader, can ONLY be moved Or attack with an army including a leader, by using the sword icon on dice. (Or its equivalent like Will of the West)

Thank You

Cheers

Or with the Army die.

Welcome to the game, Scott!

As Dam pointed out, you are allowed to recruit with Event cards even if you're not at War. However, it's also important to note that Event cards also allow you to "bend the rules" in other ways. As long as you meet the requisite conditions to play the card, you may play it, even if it allows you to perform an action that you wouldn't normally be allowed to perform. However, in performing that action, you may only break rules that the card specifically allows you to break. For example, a card may allow you to move an Army two spaces. Normally you can only move it one space, so the card allows you to break that rule, however you still would not be able to move that Army across a mountain border, as that's not legal normally and the card doesn't specifically allow it.

An Army Event Die allows you to either move two different Armies (never the same one twice with the same die) or attack with one Army. These may be any Armies you control, whether or not they contain a Leader or Character. A Character Event Die allows you to move or attack with an Army that contains a Leader or Character. Having one or more Leaders or Characters in an Army not only grants it re-rolls in combat, but also the flexibility to be activated with either Army or Character Event Dice.

Ah I get it now,

So an army die (banner) lets you move/attack-with an army which may or may not contain a leader/character

A character die (sword) also allows you option of moving/attacking-with an army with a leader/character.

thanks also for clarification on event cards
