Kaboom: Pattern Analyzer + Advanced Sensors

By SaszaPL, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So... Advanced Sensors allows you to make an action before you reveal your dial but you have to skip your Perform Action step.

Pattern Analyzer allows you to resolve the "Check Pilot Stress" step after the "Perform Action" step (instead of before that step).

What happens if both are combined (i.e. TIE/sf)?

You can vote:

1. You skip Check Pilot Stress step, because there is no Perform Action step anymore;

2. You cannot use Pattern Analyzer if previously used Advanced Sensors (because there is no Perform Action step anymore):

3. Other / other reasoning?

I would love this to be the 1st option, but I am afraid it is not... What's your view?

You get three options:

Perform your single action before revealing your dial.

Perform your single action after executing your manoeuvre, before Check Pilot Stress

Perform your single action after executing your manoeuvre, after Check Pilot Stress.

You don't get to skip CPS because you failed to do something before it, any more than you snap the game over your knee by using AS, because your Perform Action step didn't happen so you can't move on to another pilot until after it has done.

Would be my reading and my expectation. THere's basically 0 synergy between these options and you'd never want to pay 5 points to use both at the same time.

If you use Advanced Sensors Pattern Analyzer becomes redundant. It lets you Check Pilot Stress then Perform Action or Perform Action then Check Pilot Stress. Pattern Analyzer causes you to skip perform action, so you're choosing between Check Pilot Stress then Nothing or Nothing then Check Pilot Stress.

how did i know someone was going to post this?

Skipping a step doesnt skip other steps when said step is rearranged. You still skip it, whether its normally before or after the check stress you still skip it.

Those are redundant upgrades. One is premaneuver, one is post-red maneuver. Not quite the same thing but same mentality: best used to prevent loss of action on red move.

Nope: best used to prevent the stress from PTL.

Just because you skip the Perform Action step, doesn't mean it no longer exists. You're just getting to jump over it. Everything else still applies. It doesn't say delete the step, just skip (i.e.: ignore) it.

Normal Sequence:
1. Reveal Dial
2. Execute Manuever

Move Ship
Check Pilot Stress
Clean Up

3. Perform Action

With AdvS and PA:

<Advanced Sensors triggers here>

1. Reveal Dial
2. Execute Manuever

Move Ship
Clean Up

3. Perform Action <skip because Advanced Sensors>
Check Pilot Stress <moved here because of Pattern Analyzer>

They're not quire redundant; Advanced Sensors lets you perform an action that might be taken away by a collision. Pattern Analyzer doesn't affect that, since checking for stress doesn't matter when you overlap an obstacle or hit another ship.

I still don't know if I'd use them together though.

They do 2 different things, so aren't quite "redundant"... but it's like having multiple upgrade cards that want you to spend your action each round.

Recon Spec, Engine, MF title and Expert Handling aren't redundant... but putting them all on a YT-1300 is far from optimal! :P
