It's a fragment of a longer numerical designation for that particular astromech.

Well lets see the droid on the art of the card looks like the R4 astromech that we see in Episode 4 after Vader and the stormtroopers captured the Tantive IV, you can see the droid as they lead the prisoners away. That droid was named R4 M9. Flash forward to Force Awakens we see an astromech with the same paint job, but the film credits the droid as M9-G8 and likewise calls it a M9-G8 astromech droid. So either they were making a reference to the droid from Episode IV, which I think it is, or someone forgot about the whole R-series astromech line, that or someone out there is making identical droids to the R-series like some cheap knockoff product.
TLDR: It is most likely a reference tot he R4 astromech from A New Hope that looks the same called R4-M9.

For some reason I was thinking about this as well, and came up with mindgate too. But then I started thinking of the 9th Gate and how sh*tty that movie was. Didn't the bad guys knock him out and leave him in a burning room twice?!
It's a sketchy plan the first time, but twice...?
