Solid Lists for Tournament Noobs?

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

So I've been playing for a little while, but all casual. As I mentioned in a previous thread, a friend of mine just got a couple cores and has very little experience - and we're both looking to go to a store championship or even our local regionals in December.

Anyways, I thought this would be a great opportunity to post some solid lists for noobs. Not high risk/ high reward lists, but lists that are just solid.

For my friend I was going to recommend this list, because he likes Rebels and I think he's good enough to manage it. He also really liked the HWK.

Miranda Doni (44) K-Wing (29), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Proton Torpedoes (4), C-3PO (3)

Jan Ors (31) HWK-290 (25), Twin Laser Turret (6)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

For me, I think I'm going to run this list:

Omicron Group Pilot (28) Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Darth Vader (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

Countess Ryad (36) TIE Defender (34), Push the Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (36) TIE Defender (34), Push the Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

What I like about both of these lists is that they seems to have some beef with a little bit of punch. I think tournament noobs need lists that are a little forgiving, and I think these will work good. What do you think, or do you have other recommendations?

I wouldn't put PTL on any defender that's not Ryad. The white 4k is the deadliest tool that defenders have, and you basically seal it so you can't get a focus when using it with PTL. If you've got him, I'd drop the Engine upgrade on the Omicron Group Pilot, put on FCS, and turn the Glaive Squadron pilot to a Juke Vessery. Alternatively, leave the FCS off the shuttle and put Stealth Device on Vessery.

2 considerations: What you enjoy flying. What you are good at flying. In that order.

Chasing the meta and building the perfect list to counter it come a disant third to those, especially early on.

I couldn't agree more! I'm not interested in chasing the meta, but I also don't want to stick my head in the sand about it either.

It's got to be something you enjoy flying, so that even if you lose all of your games you still walk away from the event smiling about all the fun little moments you had. I also think it's important for beginner-friendly lists to be pretty straightforward, and have a bit of durability so that one mistake or unlucky dice roll doesn't spell disaster. My first tournament list was Scum Boba with some toys backed up by two TLT Y-Wings, and it was great. Nothing too complicated, nothing that would die in one turn, and I got to use a character I love. It looks like both of your suggested lists fit my criteria, though I'll second the concern that PtL isn't great on the Glaive Squadron Pilot.

I don't have Juke, so what if I put Predator in the place of PTL on the Glaive pilot?

The answer is always as many x7s as yiu can fit in a list

Palp shuttle in a pinch

Ptl should only ever go on ryad (green kturns!) others should have juke or crackshot (and be vessery)

Friend has a 96 point list? Spare him some homing missiles over protons and long range scanners

Integrated for biggs? Some crew or ept for jan?

Miranda Doni (44) K-Wing (29), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Proton Torpedoes (4), C-3PO (3) Homing missiles are awesome on Miranda is Sabine and Seismic, sometimes Autoblaster turret works well with that combo of bombs and uncanceable hits coming (up to 4 with shield and Jan)

Jan Ors (31) HWK-290 (25), Twin Laser Turret (6) Adaptibilty wouldn't hurt, wired and Niem Numb is also good if you can spare points

Biggs Darklighter (25) Droid (any 1 pt) and intergrated astro

For me, I think I'm going to run this list:

Omicron Group Pilot (28) Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Darth Vader (3), Engine Upgrade (4) I think the Palp is better, but I"m not sure I'd waste EU on the shuttle, Vader works as well as long as he doesn't die too quickly

Countess Ryad (36) TIE Defender (34), Push the Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (36) TIE Defender (34), Push the Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

I'd do Vessery with Crackshot or Juke, I've had some success with tractor beam and the other title as well. If he's not stressing himself every turn sometimes you can dump the MKII to get points

Hmmmm. I am running into point issues with putting in Homing Missiles. I can't put in extra munitions unless I ditch C3P0, swap Jan's turret out, or go with Kyle instead of Jan. I don't really like any of those options. So, what's better: 1 shot of Homing Missiles or two shots with Proton Torpedos?

As far as the Shuttle goes, I don't have the Palpatine card and won't be getting it. I read Sable Griffin's post and it made EU look real good on the Shuttle, so that's why I was leaning that way... but yeah, I think I'll ditch it. I've seen a lot of people recommend Vessery, why is he good? Does his special ability work kinda like FCS?

Sorry, question after question here... but what about this? 4 defense dice for Vessery?

Colonel Vessery (40) TIE Defender (35), Tractor beam (1), Crack Shot (1), TIE/D (0), Stealth Device (3)

Countess Ryad (36) TIE Defender (34), Push the Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Omicron Group Pilot (24) Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Darth Vader (3)

I like your lists. They are effective, and you aren't just net listing top tier lists. I think they both look like fun and I expect you will both enjoy your time. Good luck!

Thanks!

I'm thinking of taking the Stealth Device off of Vessery and putting the title on shuttle so that there's always a target lock on whatever Vessery is shooting at.

Remove the stealth device off of Vessery is you're running TIE/D. You have a pretty good chance of keeping a stealth device for a while with evade+focus (i.e. when running X7), but with just focus it's kind of a crapshoot. It's better to use those points elsewhere. Otherwise it looks pretty good.
