3 Lists for new players

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have some people coming over this weekend. They have never played X-Wing before. So I wanted three 4 person games.

I want the all to reasonably balanced and to start easy. Game 1 should be basic. I was thinking no abilities but the R2 and Integrated Astromech should be easy and balances the game a little better. The Rebels fly one X-Wing each and the Empire fly 2 TIEs each.

What are your thoughts?

Rebels Game 1:

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

R2 Astromech (1)

Integrated Astromech (0)

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

R2 Astromech (1)

Integrated Astromech (0)

I was thinking that Luke and Wedge would be iconic. But I'm really not sure of the upgrades.

I think this may be jumping into the deep in too quickly so let me know.

Game 2 Rebels
Luke and R2-D2
Wedge and ?????

Game 2 Empire:
"Night Beast" (15)

"Winged Gundark" (15)

"Mauler Mithel" (17)

"Chaser" (14)

Total: 61

How about Vader and Luke?

Maybe Soontir too?

I like Vader and Luke for my early games. But I'm brand new and while my fun factor is high, my experience level is low.

The first list drop the IA's to even things up a bit. As for Luke and Wedge um the pilot skills and abilities can really trump the 4 TIE Fighters. Second game might introduce different ships like a basic Y-Wing and an Ion turret while the Imperials unleash a TIE Interceptor and a TIE Fighter to work in Tandem. Allows people to see other ships while at the same time keeping it bare bones.

I was wondering about that. But you realize that this goes counter to most everyone on this forum that even with IA and R2 the X-Wing is still a dog. However going without any abilities would be a better way to learn anyway.

What do you think of the second game now?

I'd still like Vader and Luke for the third game.

It does go against conventional wisdom if it was a bit more serious of a game. Learning the fewer elements involved the better typically and build up to things.

Game 2

I dunno. These all seem fun and relatively balanced to me, although the PtL, Ion Turret and Tactician might be more in depth than you're looking for, in terms of intro games.

2 weeks ago my brother-in-law and his son came to play a game of X-Wing.

Though i have played couple of games with my nephew, i decided for everybody's best, to keep things simple.

1 vs 2, imperial versus rebel, 4 ships each team.

Just pilots skills. No upgrades, and asteroids. To focus on maneouvring, and not getting lost on combos.

It was pretty fun.

Imperial side was:

Brother-in-law: Vader, Capt. Yorr (he really wanted to use the Lambda)

Me: Countess Ryad, Inquisitor

Rebel Terrorists:

Nephew: Poe Dameron, Wedge Antilles, Nien Numb, Jake Farrell.

It's also curious to play some ships without autoinclude titles.

It was Imperial victory, due to some mistakes with Nien and asteroids.

Inquisitor was desintegrated by Wedge (mostly to my bad bad flying)

Countess was MVP with the Lambda.

Vader's dice were on fire and only lost 2 shields due to Numb's critics.

Wedge was a beast, killing Inquisitor, Lambda, and stripping all shield from defender.
