What will TIE Defender's do to the game?

By Shadow345, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm gonna be laughing when their bomber dice are revealed to be Blue + Red.

Wookieepedia claims:

More importantly, the ship was very expensive, with each unit costing 300,000 credits—more than five times the cost of a standard TIE fighter. .... Standard Imperial doctrine recommended that TIE Defenders operate in flight groups of four

134 / 4 = 33

TIE Defender:

  • 5 Speed
  • 6 hull
  • 6 Blue Anti-squad
  • 2 Black Battery
  • Bomber
  • 33 points

BS on the dual black bomber die. I am betting it will be an imperial X-wing, just like how the Z-95s are the Rebel tie fighters.

I say

5 Speed

6 Hull

4 Blue Anti Squad

1 Red anti ship

19 points

5 more points than an X-Wing for 1 extra hull and 2 faster speed sounds reasonable.

I think you'll see a better anti ship pool because these are not simply "Imperial X wings", they're the pinnacles of fighter technology. The only ship that should be compareable is the E wing.

What about t-70 xwings?

What about t-70 xwings?

What about them, Mad? :D

Well would they be comparable to the defender? Also i would like to play with poe dameron please.

... then the Dark Side has already won...

They are faster and more maneuverable than Xwings: see the speed 5 and 6 hull compared to 3 and 5.

Their armament is identical to an xwing except for two Ion cannons. Why does everyone think the ion cannons suddenly make them go super saiyin? Going from 1 red to two black for ion cannons is comically overcompensating.

Outgunning a Bwing in anti-ship is laughable. A bomber with one black is justifiable for the Defender.

Yes they'd be more comparable to a TIE Defender, as the T-70 was a more advanced X-Wing produced years after the Defender had come and gone. I have no doubt we'll see first order/resistance stuff eventually, but probably not for several waves.

You know, I don't even care what their stats are. Gonna use them just because they're defenders.

That is how I feel.. they will be in my build just because of what they are.. A FRACKING Tie Defender

I am sure they will not be weak and sure they will not be cheap.. But I will have one in my build

That's my vote

Aye. I'm just having fun egging people on. I'll be flying some regardless

I loathe painting them already.

Nah, easy as pie.

And when Thrawn comes out, I'm not gonna care what his ability is....it's freaking Thrawn.

I am thinking Thrawn will be the empire version of Madine.. would make sense his ability to read the art and figure out where his fleet needs to be. Could translate into navigation

Jerjerrod is the equivalent of Madine.

In some ways better (up to 2 tick increase at the speed one joint, no Nav Command required), in some ways worse (you can only potentially increase the use at speed 1, you have to take a point of damage.)

I'm hoping it inspires a lot of oiled up beach volleyball.

...and kills YT2400s dead.

I suspect that the Defender will just be the Imperials 'quality over quantity' TIE squadron. It's fast, it's tough and the likelyhood is that it's going to hit hard no matter whether it's shooting at enemy ships or enemy squadron. I'd expect it to be expencive if it's as fast as an A-Wing, as tough as a Y-Wing and hits as hard as (or harder than) an X-Wing.

Still sad that we didn't get the gunboat and avenger.

However the defender shouldn't be over the top.

While it was insane in TIE fighter it shouldnt be a super bomber. Good at everything but not awesome at everything.

And remember that the avenger was and should be the better dogfighter.

I think that the Tie Defender should be super in all aspects. And why should the Avenger be the better dogfighter?

Can you imagine the reaction from all the X-Wing fans if Armada got the gunboat before X-Wing? :P

Not in summer ways in virtually every way

It would be glorious

In virtually every way what? I made two "in some ways" comments.

Actually the TIE-Avenger is better than the Defender in some ways.

TIE Avenger: TIE-Defender:
Speed 145 MGLT 144 MGLT
acceleration 16 MGLT/s 21 MGLT/s
Manuverability 150 DPF 110 DPF
Shields 100 SBD 100 SBD
Hull 20 Ru 14 Ru
Hyperdrive Yes Yes
Laser 4 4
Ion - 2
Warhead Capacity 4 Capacity 4
Tractor Optional Optional

So the Defender has slightly better armament and better acceleration, while the Avenger is more agile, a bit faster and better armoured.

That's only true if you're using X-wing Alliance numbers rather than the TIE Fighter stats, DScipio. If we go the later then the Avenger gets lightly toasted.

TIE Avenger: TIE-Defender:
Speed 145 MGLT 155 MGLT

Manuverability 150 DPF 175 DPF
Shields 100 SBD 200 SBD
Hull 20 Ru 20 Ru
Hyperdrive Yes Yes
Laser 4 4
Ion - 2
Warhead Capacity 4 Capacity 4
Tractor Optional Optional

Trying to see if I can find a source for their other statistics, but I'm not sure there was one at that point. Either way, the Defender was 'broken' there, was omitted in X-wing vs. Tie fighter for that reason (The game file does exist, and it apparently reads "Advanced space superiority fighter. This craft is too powerful to be put in this simulation. Dream on, fanboy!"), and reintroduced in Alliance with toned down stats.
