What will TIE Defender's do to the game?
Maarek Stele
What will T/D's do for the game???
Freakin' rule!!!
They should be an approximate parallel of the X Wing in terms of Armada the game. Given how cheap the TIE's are in general, I'm in the 14-17 point crowd. Speed is awesome, but get away from your carrier, and your limited on your actions.
So what you're saying is, Maarek Steele is superior to an X-Wing in all aspects.
Right. A man should always be superior to a craft.

Thats not a man. Thats a Stormtrooper.

STORMTROOPERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, YOU KNOW.

I think you are just here to confuse us all.
Torps OR missiles. Not both. Since concussion missiles don't get a squadron the Bomber keyword, we can assume the Armada version is running Torps.
Anti-squadron armament was the same as an Xwings (4 blasters, torpedoes) plus ion cannons that were rarely ever used on squads. So 4 blue dice to match Xwings makes the most sense.
Anti-squad is the same as Xwings plus ion cannons. So most likely a red die, but conceivably a black. Certainly not enough to warrant 2 dice.
The Defender was a super-maneuverable Xwing for the most part. The Ion cannons and tractor beam rarely saw use in any book I read
I was refering to TIE Fighter and you surely never had the joy of playing this game. You can't experience dogfights by reading books. A Tie Defender is superior to a X-Wing in all aspects.
I played TIE Fighter, but preferred XWing Vs TIE Fighter.
Again, the maneuverability was superior, which is part of the speed 5 and 6 HP. The offensive armament was an Xwing+2 ion cannons. Those cannons were not used on a consistent basis for anti-squad. So 4 blue dice anti-squad is the most sensible. Maybe you could argue that thing up to a black anti-ship because of the ion cannons. 2 anti-ship dice would be comically overrating the ship.
Red blue anti ship

I switched between laser cannons and Ion cannons against fighters - and why not when it is highly effective. If you state that the Tie Defender is merely an imperial version of the X-Wing, you are wrong.
I never said it was the Imperial Xwing. I said it is comparable. It is superior in speed, maneuverability and firepower. We are arguing over the degree to which it is better. I'm saying it doesn't have a significant advantage in firepower over an Xwing because the Ion cannons were not used a lot.
Your experience and tactics playing that game are irrelevant, regardless of how fun (and let's be clear, that game was fun) it was. We are looking for canon or as close to canon sources as we can get. I'm pointing to novels in one of the few series that most people would call a good Star Wars series. You are relating personal video game experience. Personal eyewitness/experience is the lowest possible form of evidence.
Either way, I'm having fun using this as an excuse to complain while I wait on the preview articles.
I'm not playing them until they get a tractor beam. ![]()
I kind of wish FFG had given Ion Cannons on starfighters more love for Armada. Always scratched my head at fighters like the Y-Wing and B-Wing. The Y-Wing's 2 laser cannons and 2 light ion cannons = 2 blue anti-fighter dice...The B-Wing's 3 Medium Ion Cannons, Heavy Laser Cannon and 2-4 Auto-Blasters translate into 3 blue dice?

TIE Defenders aren't canon, and don't show up in any canon source.
TIE Fighter and TIE FIghter vs Xwing are official products (Licence by Lucusarts) , thus all craft in them are to be considered canon. At least from my understanding, hey could be wrong, but pretty sure Xwing vs TIE Fighter (best dog fighting game ever) was cannon, it even had Thrawn in it.

No, They Were Canon.
They are Legends now.
The Defender, however, does show up in a canon videogame source, which was their mobile game, Star Wars Commander, I believe... Along with the Phantom.
Edited by DrasnightaNope, not canon. The novels were all licensed too, but they were only dubious canon even before Disney took over.
As an example, Thrawn wasn't canon until his appearance on Rebels - even though we all knew he would be.

I feel like the dice include the maneuverability of the ship as well. It's harder for them to get their weapons to bear, so they have less dice. That was my take anyway.
The Defender will have whatever stats FFG wants it to have.
I though the novels were licenced by George Lucus (thus George keeps all the money not Lucasarts), not Lucasarts, thus the canon difference. Either way they are canon now.
I'm happy to admit that it looks like I'm wrong. Commander is listed as canon but a few different sources, so that's pretty cool. I didn't find anything about Commander or Defenders directly in the Database, though. :/
