What price point is 2nd core worthwhile?

By Tokyogriz, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Considering a 2nd core set at what discount is it worthwhile for most of you? Painting minis, extra map, backup pieces etc.

Is it worth getting at a certain price point? Say at discounts of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% or never?

Most likely scenario is 50% to 70% discount. I am sort of leaning towards 70% or around $30 for spare pieces.

I don't think I've ever seen it go lower than like $55-60. Maybe if you find a used one you could get it cheaper.

Now that we have the big errata, I'd argue the main things that you get mileage out of having extras of are:

A second nexu (especially to run two elites if you want, and with feeding frenzy coming this is even more exciting. You could get a double sided card from nationals but good luck finding a cost effective one)

And more officers (if you ever want to run 3-4 reg officers or two elites, so far this is the only way to do it)

Maybe trandoshans, though I'd argue they aren't worth fielding a lot of. The strain train with trandos just still doesn't seem like it has what it needs to be effective.

You don't need two core sets to run two sets of regular royal guards with the new double sided cards.

So, unless you really want ALL of the stuff in a second core set (more tokens, map tiles, extra cards and figures of everything) it's probably more cost effective to buy on eBay the nexu or officers. And you can always buy one storm trooper pack to get your second elite unit.

If you provide for more than just yourself to play skirmish, then a second core set is worth it. I provide everything for 3-5 people to play semi-competitive skirmish (I work with students) so I have a second core set. And two of each expansion (wish I hadn't bought two twin Suns but oh well). But I am getting two Jabba's realms for sure :)

Hope that helps you make your decision :)

I've run 5 Stormtroopers, 4 Probe Droids, 4 Officers, 2 Elite Nexus, etc.

I would say, a second core is great at any price point, when you are playing skirmish.

Depends on your situation as mentioned above. I've made use out of all of my "extras"

I also have 2 other people in my family that play, so having extras of Gideon or Officers, etc. has always been useful for skirmish. extra Nexu and Luke Skywalkers has been useful, extra officers, etc.. I've run double regular trandoshans as well, so really the only thing I haven't done is use the e-Webs. :D not yet anyway.

Sorin with probe droid list is pretty powerful and uses 2 core sets. I picked up a second core set used. I've used everything that DarBaer mentioned. I started pricing out figures and/or promotional cards online to fill out all of the lists that I wanted and found that it was going to be more expensive than buying a second core set used. That is how I determined what I was willing to pay. I ended up with a lot of extra stuff. Every time I've picked up a second box (Core and Hoth) I've sold off parts to other people to help make up some of the cost.

In campaign I also try to have 2 missions worth of map tiles parted out and ready to go before playing so that we don't need to hunt as much between missions.

If you haven't bought the dice pack, then a second set of dice is nice too. Especially now with more things starting to use more than 2 of a die (or 1 of the white).

I have 3x core.

The price I was willing to pay for extra cores is £50

I can get some of it back by selling the extra stuff (more if I'm willing to paint it) and I can donate some to encourage the local meta.

I forgot about probe droids, that's a big one! I really enjoy being able to field two elites. And if you want to run a Sorin list the more probe droids you have access too the better.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. Will head over and see if its available still at 50% off ($50).
