Suljio Ward

By leo1925, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Without spoiling anything for those who haven't read or played the chronicles of the gatekeeper adventure, i ask those that have either read it or played it; what lightsaber forms do you think the jedi knight Suljio Ward would have had during the clone wars? (apart from Niman)

Seeing as how he's a master of precognition, I would say Shien. Blaster fire is fast. You can't see it and react to it, you have to block the shot before it's even fired.

Looking at his talents and abilities, I will also say Shien.

Actually they have taken a look at reflecting blaster fire in mythbusters to see if it was doable, and on screen blaster shots fired in atmo apparently move about 100 mph, which is slightly faster than a baseball pitcher. So a Jedi hitting a blaster bolt is not that insane, a well prepared normal person could hit it sometimes.

Looking at his talents and abilities, I will also say Shien.

Out of curiosity, from which abilities do you draw this conclusion?

Ok i know that NPCs aren't made with the same rules as PCs but if we take a look at his talents and the trees in which they appear:

center of being (niman, protector, shii-cho knight)
improved center of being (niman)
improved parry (ataru, makashi, shii-cho, soresu)
improved reflect (shien, soresu)
saber throw (ataru, shien)
I overlooked the parry 3 and reflect 3 since those appear numerous times on many trees, keep in mind that niman has only one instance of center of being.
From the above i think we can all agree on niman (which also ties well with a force centric jedi), also shien and soresu seem to appear quite often and i think that both of them can be reasonable for a knight during the clone wars and that soresu is greatly benefited by precognitive abilities.
What do you guys think?

Are you thinking mentor potential? Or just no reason other than curiosity?

Because Jedi trained from birth, they have access to more than your usual PC. So he would have started with Shii-Cho as a youngling/Padawan, then progressed towards a path of his own choosing as he got older. Shii-Cho + Niman + Shien and/or Soresu would be a relatively common Jedi skillset. He might have had Shii-Cho, Niman, and Soresu, then added Shien as the Clone Wars progressed, as he would be fighting a lot of ranged combatants.

Both, also because the PCs will get his holocron i like to know what things it can "teach" the PCs (narrative reasons for PCs being able to buy lightsaber specs in this case).

Yeah you are right, during the rise of the empire era the jedi training was A LOT different than the "training" during the rebellion era.

Also that particular combination sits very well with my players' choice for careers (i guess that they will want to buy their in career lightsaber spec first) which are warrior, consular, guardian and sentinel; so i think i will keep that.

For the record, I would say that every properly trained Jedi Knight would have studied and practiced every lightsaber form. Of course, this doesn't mean they buy every spec, and have access to all six "School Techniques." It means they excel at one or two, and have a working knowledge of all of them. When a Niman Disciple has to go in aggressively, he might say, "I take a Shii-Cho stance, and engage my foe, hammering at his defenses mercilessly." When caught in a hail of blaster fire, he might instead say, "I remember my Shien training, clearing my mind, allowing the Force to guide me in deflecting the blaster bolts.

This is all just fluff, but I would say that any of the old Jedi should be able to instruct an apprentice in any of the forms. "Your quickness would allow you to excel in the Ataru style. I was never able to master it, as it is possibly the most physically demanding, but I can instruct you in the technique... when we come to it. For now, we must continue with your Shii-Cho fundamentals. Guard position one!"

Interesting take, it sure has merit but i think that the other way also has merit, in order to have the PCs to go out and seek specific parts of the knowledge of the jedi, if the players work with the GM it has the potential to create plot hooks.
