Medpacs

Like emergency medpacs, standard medpacs allow a character to use the Medicine skill without penalty as per the rules on page 232, and in addition grant boost to all Medicine skill checks.

What is considered without penalty?

My players thought it meant without difficulty. I interpreted it as the penalties for self healing or without proper gear.

You are correct. It doesn't reduce difficulty, it removes the penalty for trying to perform a Medicine check without the proper equipment.

Now, I'm not entirely sure about the part about performing a Medicine check on one's self, but it certainly doesn't mean no difficulty.

I agree as well. I also consider "without penalty" to refer to certain setback dice depending on what's going on.

If you have a medpack of some kind the Medicine difficulty to heal someone is Easy, Average or Hard depending on how many wounds they've taken in relation to their wound threshold.

If you have no medpack, you get an additional difficulty die as a penalty.

And if you are treating yourself you add two to the difficulty. I would imagine if you don't have proper equipment and are treating yourself, would increase by three.

Well, that explains this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CViJR9X7iRM

What movie is this!? I need to watch it!

"I'm Gonna Git You, Sucka!" It's been many a year since I've seen it. I think the Wayans Bros. were involved.

I am pretty sure it only means, that you dont get setback dice or more difficulty dice for "lack of proper tools" etc.

Can droids heal with medpacs? What about cyberneticists? Thanks for your help!

No, you can't use a medpac on a droid, but an emergency repair patch functions in the same way.

The equivalent of a medpac for droids is the took kit. The equivalent for stimpacks are emergency repair patches. All of this is laid out in the section of the books that covers healing and recovering health. I can't give you a page number at the moment, but maybe somebody else can?

Most of the cybernetics are written as if they are solely for meatbag characters, but they are intended to be usable by droids as well. The trick is to ignore the names and description, open your mind to what they do mechanically/practically, then reword and rename them to work for droids. Droids have no need for prosthetic organs as they don't have organs, but droids do have plenty of parts, like all machinery. Prosthetic limbs and organs just become replacement parts. Droids are totally immune to toxins, so they have no need for an immunity implant; but, all that it does is provide a rank of Resilience. So "immune implant" becomes "droid environmental safeguards." There are a few that would be completely useless and cannot be rationalized to be useful, such as the cybernetic breath mask on one of the books, which a droid will never ever need, and Special Modifications has a few that are called out as being droid only or not being compatible with droids.

Thanks! I'm still reading through all of the rules we got less than a week ago. I appreciate how you suggested to mentally rename the terms to best fit their usefulness.
