I was thinking a bit about the hand limit, which is I think 8 cards, and wondering why they've put a hand limit in where they didn't have one in Lotr. It might be to prevent players from hoarding cards with the intention of dumping a whole lot on hard late game checks. What do you all think?
Hand Limit
How do you know there is a hand limit ?

The person running the demo in the team covenant video told the guys that the hand limit was 8, but she's never seen anyone reach it before.
Yeah it seems like it'd be that way if you're often adding cards to checks.
But most of them have a resource cost so...
Edited by KentaresBut you don't pay the resource cost to add them to checks.

Forgot that...
in hind sight LOTR should have had a hand limit. Many of the excessive combos (want to say all, but I don't track them carefully) all rely on drawing lots of cards into hand. These are then discarded for benefits or as more combos. Either way, the unlimited hand size is just a basic problem.

Not all of them but the strongest ones (that I know - im a bit behind the current meta) are based in drawing lots of cards into hand. Which in my opinion means that the problem is in the card drawing and not on hand size.
Edit = what I want to say its if a card game gets cards that allow the card draw and/or deck manipulation it should have a card hand limit.
Edited by KentaresPlus I'd think it'd be easier to get cards in AH, since unlike LotR, drawing is one of the standard actions you can take. (However, I haven't played LotR in ages, so I'm not familiar with all the crazy combos)
This was a significant problem in LotR and they're fixing it in the new game. No big mystery.
I'm curious about this now. I've poked around a bit, but I'm not sure I've seen what is being discussed here. Would anyone mind posting a link to a deck or something so I can see an example?
In LOTR the problem isn't usually having a massive handsize, it's massive draw that lets you get through the whole deck to find combo pieces. It's generally hard to play an entire deck of cards all at once (although it can be done in certain degenerate cases - http://ringsdb.com/decklist/view/1275/play-all-the-allies-literally-1.0).
As said above though, in Arkham, card draw will be even stronger. Even if you can't pull together some killer combo or dump your whole hand, your hand functions as bonuses for skill checks. You can imagine a situation where a player has 20 cards in hand, mostly made up of +2 skill check things, and then just plays out all his actions dumping two or three cards on every skill check for bonuses. Cards in hand are valuable in themselves in this game, they don't require resources or a combo piece or anything to make them useful.
The more I think about it the more Im afraid that the game can be damaged by that... but lets see how it goes...

But it can't be damaged by that, since the GenCon preview said there is a hand limit. I'm pretty sure they also said each player can only commit one card per check, as well.
A couple of ideas come to mind but Ill wait for the rules to make any further comment...
Edited by KentaresThe hand limit is 8.
Ask Seastan why there should be a card limit in LotR as well...

I recently saw his play every ally deck. ![]()
As far as where it's noted -- it is on the reference card "Round Sequence" on the very last line of the card. I didn't see it in the any of the rule books.

You created a new profile just so you could revive this ancient thread? Why?!?
Interesting that they are already attacking the hand limit card, with the ally that increases it by 2. but man does Rex have a lot of card draw.
Hand size is 8 - but the only time you check it and have to discard is during upkeep phase. Between upkeep phases you can exceed the hand limit without penalty.
As far as committing cards to checks - you can commit as many as you want for your own check, but you can only commit 1 card to another players check and you have to be at the same location.
