Rebels B-wing prototype (custom ship)

By Pappkristof, in X-Wing

Hi!

I created a few custom cards for the b-wing prototype from REBELS.

Any thoughts?

Cannon needs to cost waaaaaaay more. That's a 6 dice attack before combat even engages, and with FCS it'd be broken as heck.

I like quarrie. Such a great ability, and we will have Finn soon.

It's been done.

Over and over.

My thoughts are that you haven't done your homework:

Prototype B6

Quarrie is an engineer and said himself he's never flown anything.

If I were going to use energy I would have them add critical hits.

I didn't want to use Sabine as a pilot because she is already everywhere. :) So I didn't have other ideas than Quarrie.

What do you think of the range of the cannon. I realized that it's rather a long distance weapon so range 2-4 (if core set included large range ruler) or range 2-3 for standard play would work better.

You're right! HLC: 4 dice for 7 points so I will rethink its point cost.

And I will rename it composite beam laser.

Looks like you need to install the proper fonts, so the cards will look more like the original ones.

Tip: Take binoculars and turn it around, then you will be able to read the text on the uploaded cards.

To the cards: I really like them (with Quarrie being my favourite). I also like the implementation of energy in the weapon system. All in all, as big b-wing fan, there is no limit to new b-wing pilots.

Needs a crew slot to be thematic. Quarrie needs to be crew. Cannon can be fixed by requiring a spent target lock to fire and it would be thematic again.

I would also suggest capping the number of energy tokens that the cannon can hold... Or maybe capping the amount that can be spent on a shot.

Whichever way you do it I definitely think you need to define a maximum number of dice for the attack somehow, I think the potential for brokenness is just way too high if you don't.

The multi-pulse cannon is 6 points to equip, but those points are spread over 2 cards.

Actually, I really do like adding the energy mechanic to the B-Wing. I'd be interested to see a another card in the cannon slot (so you couldn't take it + the multi-pulse cannon), that maybe let you spend energy evade tokens or something.

I remember Hera telling Sabine to wait until they were at a closer range.

"... Unlike later versions of the B-Wing, the prototype had a second cockpit at the end of the primary wing to accommodate a gunner."

Instead of Quarrie, since he isnt a pilot, (of course not putting Sabine on it) you could make a generic pilot - "Shantipole Test Pilot".

Or even go the route of Blue and Red Ace and make Shatipole Test Pilot unique and use your ability that you made for Quarrie on the Shantipole pilot.

The home-brew rules I use are crazy, silly & long-winded but covers the big gun the way I wanted (same dial and Hera pilot too):

Blade-Wing Prototype (unique)

B-wing Only. Title.

Action bar loses the Target Lock icon. Upgrade bar loses the Systems icon. You must equip the Heavy Laser Cannon upgrade and Ion Cannon upgrade and pay normal squad point cost.

When attacking at Range 2 with HLC, if you performed a GREEN maneuver this round, you may spend a Focus token to add 2 Critical results to your roll. These results cannot be modified. Then assign 1 Ion Token and 1 Stress Token to your ship. you cannot perform attacks during the next round.

You cannot equip this upgrade if your Pilot Skill is 5 or lower.

No need for energy. Just have it discarded also the cannon has to be unique and B-wing prototype only.

I say from the full B-wing 1 less hull and 1 less shield for 16 points also swap the systems slot for a crew slot.

If a B-wing prototype with a one shot ship killer cannon was in the game it would be nothing more than a palp assassin much like Boba Fet. But yeah the cannon should be 10 points range 1, firepower 3, and if it hits deal 5 face up damage cards.

People in these threads always forget that they only use the superlaser on huge ships. Huge ships cannot have evade or focus tokens.

Getting in closer to a huge ship does not equal range 1 in game.

There's no way this thing should be limited range on the table.

Range 2-3 for sure. range 3 only sounds interesting though

Maybe spending energy to recover shields?

I think that your ideas are of excellent design. I really like the aspect that you load the cannon over time to a maximum of 6 dice, even if it could be elevated to 8 dice with Jan and Opportunist. thereafter it would be hard to load the cannon again. As an opponent you would try to prevent that this cannon would shoot again. I can imagine this as a very interesting game element. Points cost are reasonable. And yes, we have enough versions of Sabine.

Sorry, but those rules are horrible...
