Little help with creating a character with unique equipment

By Charter, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello forum-goers,

A player of mine wishes to create something very specific. Before I continued; I understand that the player's idea in question might be overpowered in some manner but I wish to make this work, hence why I'm coming here for advice on how to deal with this. With that said, look below:

My player wants to play with a character who uses a blast shield of some kind (ei. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Gungan_personal_energy_shield ) and be able to deploy a turret droid of some kind as well. I've told him I'm willing to go through with this but will simply give him a disabled/damaged turret droid to begin with and a working but weak energy shield. His end-game idea is that he'll be able to set up traps with 3 or so of these droids when he can, using the shield to close distance on ranged targets to engage in melee combat (or eventually ranged combat).

The shield is the item I would like help with but any ideas for a tiny turret droid would be nice. So far, I've concluded the shield can only ever be used against ranged opponents, melee or brawl combat will have to be done normally. My question is, how should I stat the shield? With defense or add talent 'Reflect' or both? I plan to let him modify it as the game continues on. Thanks for your help in advance.

Just a FYI, I only have EotE core rule book, so I do not have access to any other books.

I think that there is an energy buckler (small shield that projects from an item like a bracelet or wrist watch) in keeping the peace (not 100% sure that this is the right book) but it provides 1 defense (black die) and can be used with the reflect talent BTW reflect is a force talent so you can't use it without being force sensitive.

The Gungan personal energy shield is in the game, but if you want to make your own: shield's are Melee weapons (usually providing +0 damage), with a high critical rating (4-6), a high encumbrance (4-5), and ranks in Cumbersome, Defensive, Deflection and/or Disorient. For just ranged defense, just add Deflection 2. So, roughly:

Energy shield: Melee, damage +0, critical 6, encumbrance 5, Cumbersome 3, Deflection 2.

Adjust the numbers as you see fit, and add a price/rarity as you see fit.

As for the turret droids, make them silhouette 0 minions, and use the the minion rules. Add an appropriate encumbrance for hauling around (I'd say at least 3), and clarify they're stationary (they can't perform the Move maneuver), and a price/rarity you'd like.

That's hacking it out. Special Modifications has extensive stuff on making gear, weapons, and droids. Nexus of Power in particular has the Gungan energy shield; it has a clause that you can't use it if you're Disoriented (and maybe immobilized or starggered, but I can't remember).

Making or buying droids with guns is doable. Shields of one type or another are in the game. So long as he understands there is no magical 'I can't be hit at all' option. Lots of places probably will not be hip with a dude followed by a polka line of droid guns. And the better his minions are the more likely NPCs will focus on disappearing them, should all be good.

Lots of places probably will not be hip with a dude followed by a polka line of droid guns.

But if you have enough of them they probably won't say anything. Like the proverbial gorilla on the airplane.

I'd paint them bright yellow and give them names like "Dave", "Kevin", and "Bob".

Totally missed the 'deflect' function in the weapons section, I will use that instead of reflect, amongst other reasons (ie. not Force Sensitive).

This is exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you again forum-goers.
