U-Wings as Ion blockers?

By Kepora, in X-Wing

As Wave 10 of X-Wing approaches, I've been looking at the U-Wing more and more. The way the folding wings work keep the gears in my head turning - and then someone on Dakkadakka mentioned a Modification I had all but forgotten about: Ion Projectors. As soon as they mentioned them, the U-Wing's ability to pull a speed 0 K-turn came back tot he front of my mind, as well as the relatively low cost of a tough, decent damage-output ship, meaning one could take multiple ones.

1: Move in formation to confront target enemy ship(s) in flight mode with a low-speed maneuver, then switch to landing mode. Make it so the enemy HAS to peel off (and potentially break formation) or risk crossing one or more large bases that could inflict Ion tokens.

This breaks into two scenarios:

2a: The enemy - which likely has a higher PS - moves and over-extends, passing over one or more bases and likely becoming ionized.

3a: Use the Landing Mod to rotate 180 and convert to flight mode. Use any abilities/crew that let you clear stress to prime yourself for an attack.

4a: Attack the now-ionized enemy.

OR:

2b: Enemy peels off, or falls short.

3b: Enemy attacks, unlikely to destroy a U-wing in a single salvo.

4b: Target a single enemy with multiple 3-dice primary attacks on your turn, or with torpedoes if you have them.

It's very basic, but a squadron of "cheap" large-base ships with Ion Projectors could really throw a wrench in some lists, particularly fast ships that are likely to overshoot through your base.

ion projectors --> 50% chance of doing anything

so...sure, half of the time

though honestly you're most likely going to run into scenario 3:

i.e you get nuked by torp scouts

incidentally, 1 ion per 50% trigger v large bases is no bueno

fun with whatshisface the dial changing crew, though

Not only could they act as ion blockers, but they carry two whole crew members. On top of that, they're large bases.

You've gotta get two tokens to get disabled as a big ship.

So you're really just one big "Screw ions" vehicle, with some fat-small-base ship agility, I imagine.

*I did not say the U-Wing has a small base. Just for clarity's sake.

Good idea, actually! That guy that lets you look at your opponent's dial then change yours (sorry - blanking on his name) is great for this kind of thing, too.

Although ficklegreendice is right - it probably won't stop U-Boats.

the real tragedy is that U-boats got the name, and U-wings did not

won't be confusing at all!
