Spending XP

By HistoryGuy, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Quick rules question. I got 30 XP from our last game. Can I use that the upgrade my agility from 2 to 3?

No, changing stats can only be done at character generation and by getting Dedication talent.

Well, and replacing limbs, and the Force, and... Basically, though, this is the answer you're looking for. "Spend XP, permanently increase ability" is a Dedication-only thing after char-gen, and is why the most common character creation strategy is to spend all available XP on increasing them.

Characteristics can only be raised by a talent called Dedication. It is a 25 point talent at the bottom of most of the talent specs.

Yes, so long as you're using 25 of it to buy the Dedication talent. Otherwise, no.

My character currently is a Hired Gun: Marauder/Force Sensitive Exile. How much would I need to buy an in career or universal specialization?

A second in career specialization would cost 30 xp, same as a universal spec (3 spec x 10 xp). A non career spec instead would cost 40 xp (3 spec x10xp +10xp for out career).

Ok. If I wanted at some point get the Force-Sensitive Emergent, would that give me a force rating of 2?

Unfortunately, no. The Universal Specs grant Force Rating 1, not + 1.

Same if you were to take a Force & Destiny Spec. Only characters who begin with one of those careers have FR1. The only way to increase your FR is to take the "Force Rating" talent.

That's what I thought. Because my character is gonna start using some force abilities soon, I was looking for a cheep or easy way to get another force point.

cheapest path is to the bottom of your force sensitive tree. just like dedication :)

i also recommend getting the another char gen. the really big thread. grab the web install off oggdudes post. it follows the rules as written so easy peasy getting things right

If you eventually purchase your Force Sensitive Exile "Force Rating" talent, you'll have FR2. You can then buy any of the F&D specs, or Force Sensitive Emergent, and work your way down to the Force Rating in those specs to get FR3+ (some of the F&D specs have 2 FR talents)

There's nothing cheap or easy about raising your FR or Characteristics. Characteristics are intended to be raised during character generation. So always spend heavily on those in areas you feel you'll need. The Force in this game is made using Luke's slow journey as the template. Thus it takes you awhile before you can really be good at it. Though if you dedicate yourself to raising your FR you can do it kinda sorta fast but that tends to leave a character a bit lacking in some areas. Driving down to either Dedication or Force Rating +1 tends to leave you hollow on skills and it may not always give you good synergy in talents that are useful. To a certain extent the skills aspect can be mitigated if you raised your Characteristics to a good level during char generation. As for the Force, pick powers that let you commit your dice for an effect. You'll get more mileage out of those than you will anything else starting out.

I used my experience to get the Force Sense abilities. But I just have a quick question. When it says to upgrade the difficulty, does that mean you add a purple die or change a purple to a red?

It can do either, depending on the current pool. This is covered in the 'Modifying a Dice Pool' section of the introductory chapter. P29-30 on Force and Destiny; I don't have the other two core books handy to cite their page numbers, but it'll be close to that.

It depends , if the dice in the pool are purple you would convert one to a red challenge die . However if all of the dice in the pool are already red challenge dice for other reasons, then you would add a purple die to the pool.

To quote the exact power in question:

"Ongoing effect: Commit (one force die). Once per round, when an attack targets the Force user, he upgrades the difficulty of the pool once."

So a medium ranged attack (provided there are no other modifiers) becomes one purple die and one red die against my character?

Yes.

That's easy. I was over complicating it in my mind.

That's what you get for practicing Jedi Mind Trick in a mirror.

A side question about XP - what is the appropriate number of experience to award per session? From what I can tell from the published modules, it looks like ~10 XP a pop. Is this too high? It seems like characters jump up in skill far too quickly at that rate. What have your experiences been?

Thanks. Don't know how I missed that.

You're welcome, lotsa topics on the forums.

I'll say that our campaign was handing out 5 XP per session for a loooong time and it's pretty slow to build up a PC at that rate. Let's say you want the bottom talent in a second specialization, it will take at minimum 95 XP to get there. (20 XP for the specialization then 5+10+15+20+25 XP if you can get there in a straight line.) That will take 19 sessions, and if you play monthly like we do that's a year and a half of play.

Our GM changed to 10 XP as standard recently, and will hand out 15 for a particularly significant session. It feels about right now.
