Local League - Time to Experiment

By SDCC, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My FLGS has started a league, set to run over 12 weeks. 75 minute, 100 point matches with participation and completion prizes. I started late so had two weeks of two games and then last night played my fifth to catch up.

We don't have to stick with the same squad for each game so I've been using it as a chance to try some different builds whilst still having a competitive edge to the match.

Week 1 - Boba and two TLT Ys. Won both games.

Week 2 - Kenkirk and Whisper. Lost both games.

So this week I had one game to play. I thought about a few different builds but didn't decide until I got to the shop.

I ended up running...

Emon (2 Prox Mines, 1 Seismic, Bombadier, Andrasta)

2 x Pirate Zs

Palob with Wired, Dengar and TLT.

100 points.

I came up against an odd build with RAC, Wampa and Colzet. I know RAC had Palpatine on it but I can't recall the rest. Other people in the league are experimenting too :)

For my squad several things intrigued me. Would the bombs work? Would I need so many placement options? Would the Zs work as harassment/blockers?

Most importantly I was quite proud of my work on Palob. Reds didn't cripple him as he could reroll focus on attack and evade through Wired whilst Dengar gave him 2 rerolls on attack against all of the enemies I was facing. Possibly overkill but I wanted him to be a bit more consistent.

Asteroids were all pretty central. Emon lined up facing all 3 enemies on the left hand side. The plan was to burst forward then 3 turn away whilst flinging bombs at the oncoming enemy. The Zs lined up centrally, looking to come in from the asteroids and give anything peeling away trouble. Palob was next to Emon but was going to immediately peel away and settle in behind the Zs before kiting.

It pretty much worked perfectly. As the Deci came in pretty fast Emon hit it with a prox mine, and then on the next turn left a seismic to hit both TIEs. He took some damage on approach but once he was away he was fine. The Deci went down under the bombs and me focusing fire on it.

Palob only managed to strip a token once or twice but the TLT was consistent and the abilities gave me options. I was really pleased with him.

The Zs chipped away and one managed to block Colzet, keeping him away from his buddies.

I did lose one Z. He was dealt damage cards by the synergy between Wampa and Palpatine. Colzet flipped a few up on Emon.

It went to time with only Wampa left with one hull. Bit disappointed I couldn't get him but very pleased with the result.

Has anyone else used Palob in such a way? Emon is lovely when it works. Not used Zs before and I was pretty pleased with them. Useful.

Next week I might have Fangs. But I might need to work some of this into it.

Nice work! I've always wanted to try Emon, but not enough to take a break from the Empire I guess.

But I have played my fair share of Palob. In one squad, I kitted him out with Dengar, TLT and Expert Handling. Most of the time people bring high-PS ships, and Expert Handling doesn't do much. But against low PS ships it's awesome because I can barrel roll to the range 2 sweet spot where both TLT and Palob's token-stealing ability are active (bonus if I shed a target lock that way). I think the only reason this worked is because I had a torpedo scout and Zuckuss as Palob's wingmen, and they hit hard enough to draw enemy fire away from Palob so his TLT can really go to work.
