Larger ships than an Imperial Class Star Destroyer?

By Shadow345, in Star Wars: Armada

Super Star Destroyer is too big to fit in the game, at least in scale.

What about Finalizer, Kylo Ren's Resurgent Class Star Destroyer?

It's much larger than an Imperial Class, almost twice as long, but potentially they could squeeze it in.

On the Rebel side we have the Mon Calamari ship Viscount.

While there was a 3km long Viscount Prototype, I would rather we see more small and Medium ships first.

Rebels could use some Medium ship love :)

Whether or not the SSD can fit into the Ahem, 'scale' of Armada, is a debate a hundred or so pages long. It's also one that's revisited with some regularity. No comment... here, I've made my position clear over there.

Going into the other ships, we have quite a few ships that could be larger than an ISD, from some Mon Cals, potentially some of the MC80 variants (depending on who you ask), the Mediator-class, Viscount-class, Bulwark III, and converted Lucrehulk.

The Imperials have an easier go of it with the Tagge battlecruiser, the Allegiance-class, Praetor-class, Mandator-class, Procurator-class, Secutor-class, the Assertor-class, the Eclipse, Executor-class (the Proto-Executor-class, and the lengths of that ship and its derivatives from 2,200m to that 19,000m 'thing'. Bleh), and my personal favoute, the Bellator-class.

Add me to the list for wanting some more medium ship attention, even if I'm fairly confident we'll see an Epic-sized Armada ship some day.

Don't get me wrong I am all for a super star destroyer model, or at least the TFA Star Destroyer. But yeah I think Armada could use a few more ships before. Problem is that Armada is running out of material unless new stuff pops out with Rouge 1.

Is the Viscount still canon?

The ships don't follow a single scale at all, so it's pretty reasonable that a Finalizer could be squeezed onto a large base. Obviously it will be scaled down even farther than the ISD, but that's ok.

SSDs are something for potential epic play. Even an extremely heavy scale back on that sucker would leave it extremely ungainly on a large base, and any base larger than large would be pretty goofy to push around the table without special rules.

I want to see more medium sized ships, maybe a cheaper imperial large base ship (any dedicated carriers at ISD size?).

I think there will be epic play for armada as well. I fully expect the ships to be around the same size as the cr90/raider from x wing. I'd prefer them to be a bit smaller though honestly. Make it 1.5x sized base as the large base. Then it can still conceivably manoeuvre alright on a 6x3ft table with the current manoeuvre tool. But I want epic sized ships to be splash releases, not part of the normal wave cycle. I'd much rather focus on "standard" size for the next 6-10 ships.

Although not as big as an ISD an Imperial Venator class Star Destroyer would come in as a large base carrier for the imperials as I believe it measures 1200 meteres making it the same size as the Liberty and Home One.

Personally I want to see a Rebel Lucrehulk and Providence class Carrier/ Destroyer. For the Imperials I'd love to see a Praetor class battlecruiser and a Bellator class Star Destroyer.

I think their is an issue with your basic argument, first that the Super Star Destroyer is too big, and second that Armada has a scale. On the first I do not agree, and the second they have a floating scale other wise some of the small ships would be super small.

the ISD model is as large as the HUGE (re: not for normal play) ships in x-wing miniatures

kinda difficult to imagine anything bigger without serious scale issues

I have a 38" long SSD Model on a 20" by 8" base and moving it on a 6x3 is no issue at all. One 'house rule' we added was that it couldn't be stopped from moving by other ships.

Aren't the X-wing CR90 and Raider nearly twice as long as the Armada ISD model?

The ISD is the same length as the gr75

Which is a huge shio tgere and utterly adorable here

I really REALLY hope that Armady stays in the Age of Rebellion. So no ships-mix with First Order and Resistance. Better get new factions in there. Like Black Sun. The Hutts. Zann. Mandalorians.

So far for the 'Finalizer' ...

And even if there is a SSD that is 4-5 the size of an ISD - apart from the question of playability and balance - what will the Rebels get?

I must confess I really enjoyed the pictures of the homebrewed SSD ...

I'm waiting for Rogue One and the third season of Rebels to see what ships they bring back into canon. Until then I have made my feelings about the SSD clear already and will not start the discussion again here.

I just want more imperial medium sized ships really. Vsd just lacks flair, its too generalist. The interdictor is fun. But I want a specialised brawler. Squad 0-1,command 2-3, Eng 3, punching hard, manueverable. Defensive retrofit.

More medium ships accross the board would be good. Problem is, I can rarely find a medium ship that I don't feel is overpriced. If I am going to spend 128 points on a VSD I might as well just take an ISD-II with leading shots and pick up a better nav chart and extra motti+hull. I do the same thing with AF's for the rebels where the 25 point jump from AF to Lib disappears quick cause and always makes me feel like I could be doing something better with those points than paying the "Medium Ship Tax"

Its because people are expecting their Medium Ships to have:

a) the Firepower of a Large Ship

b) the Speed and Maneuverability of a Small Ship

Medium Ships should be sucky compromises, I feel...

I'm in the camp of more medium ships.

As for the few large ships:

-Mon Remonda style MC80

-Resurgence class

The Resurgence class just needs the same treatment that anyone has to give the new Star Trek ships to make them mesh with the old ships. Cut the length by half and adjust things accordingly.

Then you get a big, 1500m, hollow-ish carrier ship that would be better geared towards squads but probably less well armed and maneuverable than the ISD.

The Empire medium ship has only one handicap, its speed, beyond that, the VSD is a great medium ship.

The AF on the Rebel side is a beauty as well. However, as Dras eludes to, they are MEDIUM ships and should not be able to outperform either a large ship in what the do well or a small ship in what they do well.

Medium ships are your compromise JoT ships.

I am not saying no, but more a question as I have no idea, but do the other factions you listed have enough ships to make different factions? Or are you thinking one faction for them all? If just one would they work together? Like I said I do not know, my knowledge is limited to a few books from 15-20 years ago, and the movies none of which I spent much time looking for little details.

My thought on what the Rebels will get to counter/balance the Super Star Destroyer is maybe the same as the Empire got to counter the Libberty, depending on how you look at it either nothing, or a smaller ship.

Now having said all this, I do want a Super Star Destroyer, but first I want the fleets filled out some more, I think that before we get to something the size of the Super Star Destroyer the Empire should get at least two more large, two/three more medium and one/two more small ships plus all the squadrons that have been released as fighters for X-wing. The rebels should get at least two/three more medium and three/four more small (I think they have all the large they need for now), and also all the squadrons from X-wing.

That's why (like it or not) they will be forced to use some EU material to bridge the gap OR be forced to invent new ships. There just are not enough canon ships to fulfill armada's short-term waves, and most of them are already included here.

Well I wouldn't mind them inventing new ships. The Raider is a pretty cool design. And I know not everyone will agree with every design (My lovely RAF mk2) as long as we get more plastic crack fitting of the era I am sure people will keep throwing more money.

They'll probably do a mix. Throw in some EU stuff for us old-time fans, invent some new stuff, or at least new ship designs of older non-canon ships (i'm looking at you Lancer, Ton-Falk, Endurance and Republic) and scour Rebels and Episode 8/Rogue 1 for anything useful.
