Apparently, thousands of artists submitted their work in a competition sponsored by Industrial Light and Magic (founded by George Lucas).
Some of them are great wallpaper material!

I particularly liked this one, made me giggle a bit and reminded me of the the time mum caught me having a Star Wars fighter battle with the two nuts from a walnut.

Sometimes I wonder why any Star Wars product that requires art direction even has artists that are being paid. For every project ever, Disney should just say "Hey, want to design a new blah blah blah for star wars? Send it here!", and it will be 1000x better than what they end up with on their own. This stuff is incredible.

You do realise that the split wing X-Wing is directly taken from Ralph McQuarrie's original concept sketches, right? Just like Chopper and Zeb from Rebels? That wasn't some new designer you can brush off, that was from the original master himself!
Yup, Zeb is basically the first design of Chewbacca.
Garazeb and shorty TIEs from Rebels, originally designed by McQuarrie, live in the era that they were intended be in. But split-wing X-wings were not introduced in that era.
They pop up 34 years later.
I found those pics from the ILM artist challenge to showcase how it would be more satisfying to see new ships in Ep 7, instead of the repaints we get. But wow, C3P0 has a red arm. Now that's totally cool
Did you notice that 'Danji' appeared in several of the submissions. One of the artists had on on a Deviantart page that designing a new race was part of the challenge. In most of the runners up, there was a picture of Mon Motha or Leia meeting the new race. The first place winner is also a similar picture. Could it be that the "Star Wars stories" spin off series will focus on the galactic civil war, a war that spans the stars?
