Squadron titles!

By Hawkstrike, in X-Wing

An as-yet-unexplored (in the official game, anyway) mechanic -- squadron titles! This is a way to extend the basic concept shown in the IG-2000 title to other ships and lists, encouraging synergy by flying common ships.

In my proposal, there would be two elements to squadron titles:

1. One ship, PS 6 or higher, would equip a Squadron Leader title. That ship would get abilities based on having other squad members on the board.

2. Other ships of the same type would equip a Squadron Member title. Those ships would get abilities based on the Squadron Leader.

I'm not sure if the Squadron title should be its own slot (and thus could be taken with a ship title) or just occupy the title slot).

Examples:

-------

Rogue Leader (Squadron title, Rebel Only, X-Wing only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). When another Rogue Squadron member is within Range 1-3, your action bar gains the [barrel roll] icon.

Rogue Squadron (Squadron title, Rebel Only, X-Wing only, 0 points). When Rogue Leader is within Range 1-3, your action bar gains the [barrel roll] icon.

-------

Blue Leader (Squadron title, Rebel Only, B-Wing only, PS 6 or higher, 2 points). When another Blue Squadron member is within Range 1, your defense score increases by 1.

Blue Squadron (Squadron title, Rebel Only, B-Wing only, PS 4 or lower, 0 points). When Blue Leader is within Range 1, your defense score increases by 1.

-------

Grey Leader (Squadron title, Rebel Only, Y-wing only, PS 6 or higher, 0 points). If you do not have one, add an [EPT] icon to your upgrade bar and you may equip an [EPT] upgrade. When another Grey Squadron member is within Range 1-2, you may use your [EPT] upgrade.

Grey Squadron (Squadron title, Rebel Only, Y-wing only, PS 4 or lower, 1 point). When a Grey Leader is within Range 1-2, you may use Grey Leader's [EPT] upgrade.

-------

Red Leader (Squadron title, Rebel Only, X-Wing only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). When another Red Squadron member is within Range 1-2, and you are attacking or defending, you may reroll 1 blank die.

Red Squadron (Squadron title, Rebel Only, X-Wing only, PS 4 or lower, 1 point). When Red Leader is within Range 1-2, and you are attacking or defending, you may reroll 1 blank die.

-------

Black Leader (Squadron title, Imperial Only, TIE Advanced Only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). You may equip a modification at a [-3] point cost. When another Black Squadron member is within Range 1 and you perform a Focus action, you gain an Evade token.

Black Squadron (Squadron title, Imperial Only, TIE Fighter Only, PS 4 or lower, 1 point). When Black Leader is within Range 1 and performs a Focus action, you gain a Focus token.

------

Gamma Leader (Squadron title, Imperial Only, TIE Bomber Only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). When another Gamma Squadron member is within Range 1 and you perform a Target Lock action, gain a Focus token.

Gamma Squadron (Squadron title, Imperial Only, TIE Bomber Only, PS 4 or lower, 1 point). When Gamma Leader is within Range 1 and performs a Target Lock action, you gain a Target Lock on the same target.

------

Twin Suns Leader (Squadron title, Z-95 only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). When another Twin Suns Squadron member is within range 1-2, during the Combat phase, you may treat your pilot skill as 2 points higher.
Twin Suns Squadron (Squadron title, Z-95 only, PS 6 or higher, 1 point). When Twin Suns Leader is within range 1-2, during the Combat phase, you may treat your pilot skill as 2 points higher.

... etc.

Been suggested a couple times (included by me) I do love the synergy you create with it but you know that whoever is leader is going down really quick in the game lol.

Also no Wraith squadron love

I'm ashamed :P

I would love to see a Battle for Yavin campaign where they include different unique titles for the T-5 X-wing such as Red-2 or Red-5.

Squad Titles in Epic play would be...well, epic. ;)

The current design team doesn't do "thematic", sorry.

That does sound like a lot of fun. Good idea.

Nice idea. As noted above, I'd rather have it as purely "Rogue Squadron" title (or whatever) - if you have a lynchpin "Leader", there's no way they're making it past the first shooting phase....

Whilst the idea is solid (and I've been a fan of previous suggestions to bring Rogue Squadron into the game) I feel that it might over complicate things a little. This game is great because of its simplicity. I can play it with my buds, I can play it at a higher level down a the FLGS or I can play it with my 9 year old nephew.

We've just got the new game mechanic 'Conditions' to utilise .. maybe Squadrons might be too much.

It's a shame though .. from a thematic perspective, I think Squadrons is more fitting to this game than the new Conditions mechanic.

GW used a data sheet thing. Basically you are told what you need to take (paying points). You paid points for the data sheet as well but it gave you insane bonuses. I would love to see a balanced version of that.

Like red Squadron 3pts

3x x wing of ps 5 or higher paying all points.

Treat all torpedoes as 0pts.

I'm well aware that that isn't great but it was an example off the top of my head.

Rogue Sqd made it into Armada via the Campaign pack so there is hope. It enables them to move and fire in a single activation which is huge.

Therefore, I was thinking:

Rogue Squadron - title - 1 point

Increase your Pilot Skill by 1

Reduce cost of any equipped astromech by 2

The first time in a round that you are declared the target of an attack, you may perform a boost or barrel roll action.

Here's something very generic.

Title

'Escort'

At the start of the round designate a friendly ship that is being Escorted' or something....

When the 'escorted' ship is targeted by an attack you may acquire a target lock on it.

Nice idea. As noted above, I'd rather have it as purely "Rogue Squadron" title (or whatever) - if you have a lynchpin "Leader", there's no way they're making it past the first shooting phase....

Maybe the 3 hull interceptor pilot is speaking out of me. But ever considered not to bring your leader into arc of all enemy ships are once? ^-^

It is not like Howlrunner dies turn 1 in swarm. At least not always ^-^

Besides, just don't give Biggs the title :D

I'd like to see a Squadron-type card that, rather than being equipped to your ships, was actually set up like a ship card & "equipped to your squad". And it should be a full-size (ship-size) card, lots of room for text. It could even come with a special "Rogue Leader" ID (tombstone) token, and have a special rule/bonus for that ship (though I agree that killing the leader can't whack the whole Squadron effect).
