How to use CR90B's?

By Shadow345, in Star Wars: Armada

SW-7 Ion Cannon's seem nice, but is blue range to close? Maybe in a Mon Mothma list?

What about using them as a body just to carry Leia and get an extra activation, or slap on Jaina's light and do an Intel Sweep or Dangerous Territory mission with it.

How have you used them to success?

Flotilla hunters.

I've used them with Ion Canon Batteries, SW-7's, and NK-7's all with mixed results. Sometimes they get the shots off and survive, other times they just get swatted before getting into range.

To handicap yourself because you're just that good.

Rieekan w/ SW-7s. Park in front of your enemy with a double arc, do 3 damage twice. Plus one face down card for them ramming into you and staying still, so your other ships can flank them.

All this after you are dead. Because they shot you. Because you were parked right in front of them.

I did manage to pull that off one time, if I remember correctly that one spunky corvette chewed up a GSD before dying at the end of the round.

I rather like CR90B's, quite a bit more than A's when used in force. Anyway, I typically run SW90's in pairs and mirror their commands so they effectively work as one ship (and 2 targets).

I find that the CR90's are rarely the ship I want to activate first unless I've already got them in an ideal position. Yavaris or the like tends to take priority, so by the time 1-2 activations have gone by, the CR90's are typically in blue range anyway. If they're dead before then, meh, it's 44 points.

Anyway, I try to maneuver them in close in a wedge and use them to nip at my opponent's heels at high speed (3--4). It's worked, I usually lose 1 but the second often has enough momentum to escape. Still, If you're fighting just one ship (and it's a not a broadsider) a Defensive Split can work beautifully. Break your CR90's apart at speed 2-3, then accelerate into the turn when your opponent has picked which of the pair they're going to engage. Then you can try to heel those ships and try to shake an opponent with the lead bait ship and weave behind with the attacker.

It's worked well enough, last tournament I tried that at, they accounted for 2 GSD's one round, and Ackbar's Assault Frigate in another (The CR90B cut in front of it. The next round, there was a choice to try and kill Yavaris or go after the CR90, Yavaris survived the Ackbar barrage and the CR90 polished the frigate off and darted away). I can't recall the last but I think I was nipping at an ISD with both and they survived.

CR90B with SW7 are my preferred piranha ship. I can't get my TRC90's to function half that well.

CR-90B's work very well with Cracken and SW-7's

Flotilla hunters, Dodona's pride I think it's good, and what most people miss is that can be great pocket support ships, tantillies with protection experts is really nice little support ship

Ion cannon slot, but if you really need ion cannons it is probably better just to take a MC-80 Command or a Wing-80 Star cruiser instead as they are also ion cannon slot ships that are heavier on the blue dice, but they have way more hit points so they last better than the CR-90 along with not being helpless at red range.

They may have a place in Non Ackbar list as a super cheap damage reliable escort for rebel gunships. Help you burn a MC30 or Demo faster who wants to keep your ship in one spot. Dodonna's Pride can help make it look menacing.

I cannot begin to express how many times I have done this.

I would add that there's a rhythm and rhyme to playing with SW-7-Bs. One big key is if you can activate the B's last on the first turn. They are fragile, so the more ships that everyone activates, the more you can see where you need to be and the more you can minimize incoming fire on turn-2. It is fully conceivable that an SW-7-B does 15 damage over the course of the game. It doesn't matter what it does after that point. You've pretty much traded it up.

:)

En masse, with Rieekan and SW-7's. 8 of them is 382 points, and amazing fun.

Its a good vehicle for Overload Pulse IMO. Get onto a flank with a double arc and activate early with a Concentrate Firepower order. I've also used it as a cheap command vessel; stick your admiral in it and just steer clear of trouble.

If the sw7s were I'm the corvette box I'd totally be down for that. Maybe six with a flotilla and some squadrons?

Tried the ol' Rieeken SW90 swarm (but 3 of them in the list) a couple of weeks ago. It was glorious :D

and

I think you would still get most of the value with 6 + flotillas/squadrons. I frankly haven't flown the list since W3/4--I stopped running it because it really sucks to play against, so I was driving people away from the game by bringing it.

Yeah a swarm of them (at least 3, preferably 4+) with SW7s and a commander that supports them (Mon Mothma, Cracken, particularly Rieekan) are crazy amounts of pain for a very low cost. Just remember to double-arc whenever possible and Concentrate Fire because 3 damage + 3 damage is a lot of damage that comes in little chunks that you can't use defense tokens against very well. Against flotillas they're pretty reliable as well.

In my Dodonna list I used a 90B w/ the Pride title as a pocket carrier for a Luke squad that would flank big ships to hopefully get some shield bypassing crits through very early in the match to cripple them. It worked great when the rolls were with me and was a waste of 65 points when they weren't.

It was more fun than effective, but for anything but the most cut through of tournaments that is enough for me.
