Brand new player(s) getting ready for first adventure this weekend!

By eliteone, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi all, new to Imperial Assault. We've done X-Wing and Armada (my favorite) from the FFG Star Wars lines. I had a couple questions that I couldn't find an answer to and wanted to pick the communities brain about beginner advice.

First question: My group wants to take turns being the Imperial Player. (Not all of em, just two, maybe three out of the five. Is this allowable or are you locked into your role once you start the campaign?

Second question: One of our players is obsessed with Princess Leia, so in my order I picked up that expansion. Can we have my group member start as Leia or should we play with the stock pieces to start?

Third question: Should I order the extra die pack? Needed it for Armada and was wondering if the same was true here.

Any general advice/rules new players miss that I should know about?

Thanks all!

These are mostly just opinions, but maybe they'll still help:

1. You can definitely switch roles during the campaign if you want to, but you'll often make decisions about upgrading your character/role that will last for the rest of the game. So if you're okay with accepting the previous player's decisions about how to upgrade your role, or will make those decisions as a group, then you can switch partway through.

2. Princess Leia isn't a playable hero - in the campaign she's an ally that can come help the heroes, but only if they complete the mission required to get her. If you want, you can houserule it so that the Rebels start with her as an ally, or get to do (and automatically "win") her side mission first. You'd just have to follow the rules about bringing allies to a mission.

3. I've found the extra die pack to be useful, but it certainly isn't necessary.

Thanks so much!! Very helpful.

I would add that a bit of roleplaying is certainly okay. I.e., if the Imperials are thrashing the Rebels every round, maybe don't use every tool the Imperials have in their arsenal each mission, and use some weaker units. Or have your stormtroopers just bum rush the heroes without cover. Stuff like that. It's fine if one side dominates a mission or 2, but if one side is winning every mission easily, it's pretty demoralizing.

True - though, hopefully this will be less of a problem if they rotate who is playing the Imperials.
