No Distintegrations

By Kyla, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Being good at hand to hand means you're only disarmed when you're out. The notion that there are places where you won't be able to have any gear isn't particularly far fetched, or lulling people into a false sense of security because you handed over all your weapons and then you go all Captain America in the elevator on them...

Love that scene.

"Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?"

Watch the movie. Captain America Winter Soldier. Just saw it, 10 kinds of awesome

Oh, I've seen it. Many a time. Have the blu-ray.

The Russos have knocked it out of the park both times, with Winter Soldier & Civil War. Joss is leaving the Avengers in good hands.

Totally agree.

I watched it three times in three weeks just before Civil War, and it actually improved with each watching.

That scene is even better when you play it in slow-motion because you actually pick up more detail. I've had tons of good ideas I can convert to my game from that movie.

A martial artist career gives those characters who want to dump a lot of points into Brawl or Melee something cool to do.

Goodfellas taught me that you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. But in a game, it's of primary importance that all those pools of dice have an opportunity to shine to avoid skills becoming dump stats.

The second priority is emulating the feel of Star Wars . The third priority is narrative cohesion. Realism isn't in the top five.

Considering how effective blasters with stun setting are in inflicting strain damage, I don't see as much need for fisticuffs to serve that role in Star Wars.

If effectivity is only meaningful thing, then FFG should take most Mary Sue species and make it the über species and scrap others, and do same do careers. One super career would be enough. Other option is to offer many alternative ways to do things.

And to Personally I'd take one more (non force sensitive) martial artist spec than one more ranged combat spec, because there are AFAIK fewer martial artist specs than ranged specs. But most preferably I'd always take non combat spec.

Way to take my point to the absurd. I said that I didn't "see as much need" which is hardly saying that there is no need. And as for the one career and such... please stop trying to base an absurd argument on something that I didn't even say (or imply).

First of all, I'm sorry I was a blunt and it came out disrespectfully. My bad. I just tried to show through hyperbole how having enough of one thing is not a good reason for not having another thing.

And then more closely back to what I tried to say. (Following is how I think it is, I'm too tired to fully fact check this, so I may be totally incorrect.) This game already has very powerful and effective guns. It has relatively and absolutely fewer non force sensitive martial arts / close combat career's, probably because of jedis/force sensitives kind of are the ninjas/martial artists of this world. Widening the options on areas where there are not that many options is IMO always good.

Disclaimer: I don't actually care very much about the having more combat oriented specializations anyway, personally I'm (and surprisingly, currently also the group I'm playing with is ) more interested about non combat stuff.

Apology accepted (and no Force choking needed).

I just wanted to point out that, in-universe, the need to take people alive wouldn't have been a strong drive to develop martial arts when the most commonly carried personal weapons can do it better for all save the most masterful of martial artists.

From a metagame perspective of trying to make all options attractive, then by all means punch/kick away. Han Solo will think the character is a fool, since nothing beats...a dead horse and all that. ;)

Hmmm, while I don't have a currently active netflix account (most of my movie watching is from my DVD/Blu Ray/Laserdisc/VHS collection), fortunately things like Can I Stream It exist! I'll see what I can do.

I too wish to learn from Desslok. I think your Top 50 list would be pretty interesting.

And due to popular demand, here's my Top 50 (at least at the moment) movies in my collection!

The Untouchables taught me that you don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Fixed it for you. ;)

Good point. I'm not super familiar with SW universe, so I'm thinking this more from point of my roleplaying game experience, which guides me for more options.

But then again, I see a lot of old western and even war movie influences in Star Wars movies. Which again don't very much support martial arts influences.

One point though. One shouldn't see martial arts only as way to take a people alive (though that can be one aspect), IMO it's more about taking target down without help of guns. In movies there have been more ninjas killing people than just incapacitating them. So, there are many options, and this mostly comes to personal tastes. (I'm not implying you meant martial arts could be only used in non lethal way. This is more just a general though to continue discussion.)

My son would narrate his Bounty Hunter Assassin's actions as: 'Lad' Kale Quick Draws his 'Chat S***, Get Banged' Stick (actually a gaffi stick) out and twats them 'round the back of the head.... his days of throwing stun grenades are long gone

So "d@mn" gets censored, but "twats" is perfectly OK.

Anyone else ever wonder who programmed the censorship software for various websites?

Actually, I meant Casino . :P

"You beat Nicky with fists, he comes back with a bat. You beat him with a knife, he comes back with a gun. And you beat him with a gun, you better kill him, because he'll keep comin' back and back until one of you is dead."

For those who care, the old StarWars.com Encyclopedia confirmed the Kage Warriors to be martial artist.

And, for anyone who doesn't know, Kage (pronounced Kah-Geh) is Japanese for Shadow.

It was also the name of the official Shadowrun newsletter during the 1990s.

And the GI Joe comic book ninja clan, the Arashikage, was Japanese for Storm-Shadow. :P

Hmmm,, maybe coz the singular t*** is UK slang and not US slang for something else not meaning 'to hit someone' :) where as the plural means to hit someone. I'm 40 mins drive out of Birmingham City Centre, it's a local slang term.... I get funny looks when I use the term with my brum buddies on a Friday or Saturday night on Broad Street etc

Before we get started... is there anyone that would like to get off?

I'm new to the game and building my first campaign right now. Definitely looking forward to this book! :)

We got one to over 50 pages back in the day. Ended up discussing Red Dwarf, of all things.

Even by my standards, that's impressive de-railing!

I kinda miss ErikB. :(

Hey, I’m always happy to talk about Red Dwarf, if that’s the direction you want to go! ;)

I kinda miss ErikB. :(

Not me. There’s a level of troll-itude there that I think we are much better off without.

Honestly surprised he stopped making troll accounts.

Maybe something ate him.........?.......
