No Distintegrations

By Kyla, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My group buys the books, but in all honesty we use PDF's when it comes to rapid reference to materials. It's just much more convenient then having to pull out several en-cumbersome books to reference some obscure item.

This book can't come out soon enough though. I've been waiting since the Edge days.

So, let me first state that I own all the books that FFG have published to date regarding the SWRPG. In fact, I own more than one copy of a few of them. Part of my OCD issue is that I’m a Completionist, and so I just have to have a copy of every book.

I used to haul them all around to the game when I was a player, because I could do so and there weren’t so many books out, and most of the other players (and even the GM) either had no books at all, or they had very few. I was the only one who had them all.

As time went on, and more and more books got published, it became more and more painful to try to haul them all around. I stopped trying to do that about a year ago. I started editing down the books that I could be certain I would not need — either as player for myself, for one of the other guys at the table, or as GM.

If FFG did come out with a “Compleat Book of Starships”, and various other “Compleat” books, then I probably would buy them all anyway.

But I think most people would not appreciate the duplication of material, if those books were to be published any time soon.

And if they’re not published any time soon, then all the people screaming to have all the “Compleat” books published are never going to stop screaming.

So, there is simply no way for FFG to win on this matter. They’re going to piss off a whole huge chunk of their fanbase whatever they do.

I can’t tell you for sure what they’re going to do, because I don’t run the company. But I think the most logical thing for them to do would be to continue to print more books of various types and in various categories, and simply never bother to print the “Compleat” type books.

IMO, as soon as they start printing “Compleat” books, the game is basically dead, because that would mean that we are almost guaranteed to never get any more items of whatever type they put in the “Compleat” book.

So, if they never print a “Compleat” type of book, then the game is basically never dead, because they can always come back and print another book in one of the various categories, but maybe set in a different part of the galaxy or a different period in time or whatever.

For those of you who do need a complete index of everything, there are several options available to you. None of them are perfect, and none of them were created by FFG, so they’re not “Official”, but they do tend to be pretty accurate most of the time.

And honestly, I think that is the best you can ever reasonably hope for in this space.

In other words, Sammy Hagar's philosophy on "greatest hits" collections: "When you release a greatest hits collection, you're saying, 'I've said all I have to say as an artist. I'm done.'" Words to that effect were his reaction to the Van Halen "Greatest Hits" collection being released. He said he'd released a solo greatest hits collection because he figured that, after joining Van Halen, he had nothing more to add as a solo artist. Meanwhile, he felt that the band was still an active concern, and releasing the collection was counter-productive. "If I would have ever dreamed that I wouldn't be in Van Halen anymore and was going to have to resume my solo career again, I would have never contributed anything towards my own greatest hits package."

Of course, in short order, he found himself out of the band, and was back as a solo artist. But, I understand his logic. And, it can apply here.

"Well, we don't have any more vehicles to give you guys, so here's the 'Vehicles Greatest Hits' book."

In other words, Sammy Hagar's philosophy on "greatest hits" collections: "When you release a greatest hits collection, you're saying, 'I've said all I have to say as an artist. I'm done.’"

Basically, yeah.

The other example I would give would be when someone publishes an auto-biography. For some few rare people, there might be room for another auto-biography to be published further on down the road, but those are the rare few.

For most people, once the auto-biography is published, they are basically declaring themselves to be a historical figure that has already contributed about as much as they’re ever going to contribute.

So, yeah — we could call it Hagars Law.

What sort of weapons cause disintegrations? Or how does one disintegrate? Is this disruptor technology? Does Boba Fett love Darth Vader?

I've always taken "no disintegrations" to mean "if you kill him I want proof". If someone turns into a pile of goo or dust, you only have the hunter's word that the target was eliminated. Which is probably enough for some people (especially if the hunter has a good reputation) but Vader doesn't mess around.

Also, it's possible that Boba Fett was captured by the previous Boba Fett and took up the mantle when the old Boba Fett retired (after all, he wears a full body suit and helmet). And Anakin likely dealt with Rodents of Unusual Size on Tatooine (Womp Rats). That's a whole side story to the original trilogy I never considered, nor have I ever wanted to.

I’ve always wondered why they called them “Womp Rats”. Is that because they made a “Womp” sound when they blew up exploded because you hit them with a Light Laser Cannon from a T-16 Airspeeder?

EDIT: I decided that “exploded” sounded much better than “blew up”. I mean, can you imagine hitting a Womp Rat with a Light Laser Cannon? ;)

I liked the scene where R2-D2 had Chewbacca and Han kidnap Leia but Han was distracted by the six-fingered Sith who killed his father.

More likely, "I want him alive; no disintegrations" (in order to torture the hell out of Solo so that Luke 'feels' it and comes runnin').

Also, as much as I love the title No Disintegrations , I was hoping that FFG were going to avoid using duplicate titles from old SW games (I was actually hoping ' By Any Means ' for the title). But No Disintegrations is a cool title none the less.

No scorched earth-style capture. No vaporizing them with ship weapons, not blowing up an entire building, no missile launchers.

Maybe it's memetic; Boba Fett takes out a target by reducing them to ashes one time , and now every client asks for "no disintegrations."

Aaaaaand maybe a sneaky melee specialisation? We could use one more of those in EOTE

Well, we do have the Assassin spec from the core rulebook, with three ranks of Stalker plus Melee and Stealth as bonus career skills. That largely covers "sneaky melee" pretty well, while also being able to pull double-duty as a ranged combatant to boot.

To be honest, I never looked at Assassin as a melee specialisation since none of the skill n the talent tree mention melee attacks, but it also never states ranged (apart from sniper shot) so...holy bantha, did I unterappreciate that specialization :o Is there a rule that prohibits using targeted blow and anatomy lessons during the same attack?

Just the "only one Destiny Point may be spent per roll" limitation discussed in the first chapter that goes through the basic dice rules. So not only could you not stack those two talents in the same combat check, but you also wouldn't be able to spend a Destiny Point to upgrade your check if you wanted to have the option to use one of those talents for that attack.

Thanks, that's the rule I was thinking about! I know that players and GM may not both use DP during the same roll, but I was unsure if the wording goes "only one side may use" or "only one point may be used".

Don't forget Deadly Accuracy which can be applied to Melee or Brawl if you feel like it.

In fact, the only talent in the entire Assassin tree that only applies to ranged attacks is Sniper Shot. Every other talent in the tree works with a melee or brawling weapon.

I always hoped that Boba would be the one to kill Windu, and he'd disintegrate him where Anakin would see.

Guns don't disintegrate people, people disintegrate people.

Vader sent Boba Fett to get the droids on Tatooine and he disintegrated Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen...Now Vader is more specific.

My life is already easy. Between the Index was linked earlier in this thread and this one right here , the species thread in my sig line, and OggDudes character generator I honestly can't say that I need to carry much of anything around. If one were to make use of the available resources one would discover that we already have for free what some people are proposing we pay for.

Given all of that and proper preparation, I will truly never understand why people claim they HAVE TO carry around all their books and thus need FFG to produce a big book of.

That Google Drive one. My wife made that using our books. It's been en enormous help.

That is a very nice resource, to bad FFG don't have the rights to do it themselves since an app/resource like that would have solved a lot of issues regarding the "complete gear book" kinda thing.

I also must admit I find it a bit funny when someone thinks there is no need for a collection book since you can use unsanctioned fan made sites that potentially could get told to take it all down if they get to popular.

What sort of weapons cause disintegrations?

Guns don't disintegrate people, people disintegrate people.

Actually guns disintegrate people. Without a (disruptor-like) gun, it's pretty hard to disintegrate someone!

Actually, the GM and a player can indeed both use Destiny points for the same check. First the active character decides if they want to upgrade the ability of the check, and then the other one decides if they want to upgrade the difficulty. The only restriction is that they can't flip the same Destiny point back and forth, since technically the tokens aren't flipped until after the roll is made.

I always hoped that Boba would be the one to kill Windu, and he'd disintegrate him where Anakin would see.

I would think that Boba would need to be a bit older for that to have happened. Though a much older Boba getting the better of Mace Windu might have made for a better story than what we got onscreen. I like the idea of Windu escaping and Vader sending Boba after Mace.

I also must admit I find it a bit funny when someone thinks there is no need for a collection book since you can use unsanctioned fan made sites that potentially could get told to take it all down if they get to popular.

It's a pity that was never the argument I made. The argument I actually made was that such a book would be recycled material and it's a bad idea to make people pay twice for same thing. I highlighted that web page to back my point that in this day and age you only carry 20 kilos of books if you want to.

As my current only PC is a Bounty hunter/Gadgetter with second spec in droid tech I look forward to this with hopes that there will be some good gadgetter synergy.

As for the collection books, PLEASE!!! I am a completionist and also run and play away from home. So splat books are good for me @ home but collections would be good when I run.

IMO, as soon as they start printing “Compleat” books, the game is basically dead, because that would mean that we are almost guaranteed to never get any more items of whatever type they put in the “Compleat” book.

Not necessarily; Paizo published Ultimate Equipment, and almost every book they've published since has magic items or some other equipment in it. It just means that the books are only Complete up to a certain point in time.

What would solve the problem for me is PDFs or some other electronic version of the rules that I can put on my iPad. One iPad weighs a lot less than 18 splat books, or even 3 or 4 compilation books. :)

I wish I knew who to write to at Lucasfilm (and EA, if the PDF restriction really is due to video game restrictions) to ask that they revise their contracts so that FFG can make PDFs of books.

Sadly the cost to revise those contracts is likely greater than the profits FFG would earn from selling PDF's. When have you ever known EA to give up something cheaply?

There's the rub..

Whilst we are a vocal group, we must remember that RPG's are a niche market of a niche market. Not all people are Star Wars fans, and not all Star Wars fans are roleplayers.

While I get the whole "EA are evil" hate, Lucasfilm never changed the liscence either with WotC or currently. While I would like pdf's, it really is a laborious and not worthwhile effect to mess up million to billion dollar contracts and deals for, and being generous, hundreds of thousands of dollars that the RPG sales could bring in.

It is sad but true, that the foresight was not there when it came to electronic media, but the technology is fairly new to the mass market in the grand scheme, and there are many laws that haven't caught up with technology.

There are also facets of my Countries government are swiching over their documents to digital only, and some that require physical copies of said documents. Lack of communication/too many cooks in the kitchen.

Also, the lack of PDF's is thematic to Star Wars. If anything, FFG should release a droid that will read the rules to you.

So back to the book at hand... Do you think we will see the Ubese in this release?
